SEO Jargon Buster: Sitelinks

Welcome back to our Seo Jargon Buster series of blog posts! This week, we will be taking a closer look at Sitelinks, and how they can improve your website’s search engine performance.

What are sitelinks?

Google sitelinks are the smaller links that appear under the first result once a search engine results page, and they are particularly common when the search relates to a specific brand or company name.

If you are still not fully sure about what we are talking about, take a look at the image below, and you will see the sitelinks in the red box.

An example of how Google sitelinks may look.

Sitelinks are included in these searches by Google to make it easier for users to reach their desired page on a website. To use the image above as an example, a visitor to the bSoftware website can go directly to any of the 6 pages listed as sitelinks without having to go through our homepage, saving them time. Essentially, these sitelinks direct users to the best results in the shortest amount of time.

However, it is likely that sitelinks will not appear for your website on a Google results page if it is poorly structured or is not optimised to do so, meaning that you are losing the opportunity to make your brand stand out.

Google has said this previously on sitelinks:

“We only show sitelinks for results when we think they’ll be useful to the user. If the structure of your site doesn’t allow our algorithms to find good sitelinks, or we don’t think that sitelinks for your site are relevant for the user’s query, we won’t show them.”

Why are sitelinks important?

Sitelinks can prove to be beneficial for a number of reasons, including the following:

  1. Sitelinks have been proven to improve click-through rates
  2. They help to build trust with visitors and enhance your credibility
  3. They can increase your brand and product awareness
  4. Sitelinks make is easier for visitors to browse the deeper pages on your website

How do you generate sitelinks?

Unfortunately, there is no direct way to ensure that sitelinks will show for your website. As we mentioned previously, you should ensure that your website’s structure is clear and logical, and this will increase the likelihood that Google will be able to generate sitelinks from this. It is also imperative that you rank #1 for your brand name in search results, and you should also submit a sitemap file through Google Search Console to help Google to crawl your website more effectively.
