Are you really Anonymous … ?

We used to think that by using VPN, we can change our IP address and be Anonymous. Apart from that we also use services like tor for being total anonymous. We think that by using such services we can be total anonymous and use deep web safely. But sometimes that’s not the case. Now we came to know that FBI can crack tor using their own techniques. So now tor is also not so anonymous as it claims to be.

Normally tor has three main parts.

  1. Entry Node
  2. Middleman
  3. Exit Node

Entry node is the point where user is. User’s IP is entry point into the tor network. After that comes Middleman, which contains all the series of connections which makes us anonymous (as they claim so). After that comes Exit Node which is exactly the IP which server sees when it gets request. Tor has always kept web traffic anonymous by delaying or otherwise altering the packets of data that are sent through servers, making it look like the traffic is coming from a place that it’s not actually. that’s why Tor tends to run slower than your standard browser. If the end server of the site you visited can also detect the origin point of where your traffic enter Tor, then Anonymity is lost. We used to think that by using this we can be anonymous but now maybe it is questionable. This is how it looks graphically,

Now that we know it works, lets see how it can be cracked. Like every anonymity software, if both ends are visible or if the entry point is visible then anonymity is lost. That way you can track user’s IP address and there will be no meaning of tor or any other anonymity software.
Either ways there is no way you can be absolute anonymous, no matter which software or services you use. But there are some best practices you can follow apart from using tor. Tor will try to make you anonymous but it will not do everything by itself. You do have to change some habits or settings.
Like only using VPN will not make you anonymous, you have to check for DNS leak. If your DNS is leaking there will be no use of changing your IP address. So what you can do is that you can use proxychains which are dynamic in nature. So every time you fire up your browser it will automatically find new IP that will be little convenient. Habits of using incognito modes is also good. Apart from that if your work is little danger or private you can always use “tails” live cd to do it, so it will live no trace. These are number of things you should follow to get near to anonymity. Because we know “Security is an illusion” but also “Absolute anonymity is impossible”.
