5 Awesome Free Video Editors

Video informs and entertains people, and good or bad, today most people prefer to watch a video rather than read a page of text. [Lisa Luban]

I can still remember some years ago when I had to edit a simple video. It required trimming the start, the finish and converting the video to another format.

Being inexperienced and ignorant on Editing a video, I purchased and actually dived into Adobe Premiere, which turned out to be an eye-opening experience for me.

Something that would have taken me a few minutes today, took me several days to accomplish back then. With absolutely no video editing experience, I had to find my way around the dashboard and timeline of Adobe Premiere.

Trying to learn on the job is not the best solution to master this software. Thankfully, I eventually accomplished what I needed to do and just marked this as my first learning experience in the world of video editing.

Today I still have Premiere on my computer, but have checked out other editors to see what they offer. There are so many options available today that it can actually become confusing.

Video World

Capturing video today has come a long way. Everyone has the ability to shoot high-quality 4K video anytime and anywhere with their smartphone right out of their pockets. Just about every mirrorless or DSLR camera also has the capability of recording very professional quality video as you can witness on Youtube.

For some, iMovie that comes bundled in new Mac’s (also free from the Apple Store), or Windows Movie Maker which can still be downloaded free for your Windows 10 machine is more then sufficient for what they have to accomplish.

Next Level

If you need an editor that offers more professional level tools, you are in luck. There are several video editors that are very affordable because they are Free.

So why would you want to use one of these free options over Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro?

1.Fully featured:

The ability to accomplish everything most users require.
Here are a few examples:

  • Supports all popular video formats
  • Drag and drop video clips into timeline
  • Apply video transitions and effects
  • Cut, slice, trim, split video tracks
  • Color correction
  • Audio tools

2.Fast learning curve

  • Video tutorials available on Youtube
  • Tutorials accessible on providers websites
  • Just right for beginners, many are easy to use

3.You do not need an expensive computer

Most of these software will run on basic hardware unless you are editing 4K.

  • If you don’t mind the rendering wait time, you can get away with 4G of ram and an I3 processor with no dedicated video card
  • Davinci Resolve requirements: 16gb ram, 4gb graphic card.
  • My hardware opinion for non 4K editing:
    minimum ram = 8gb
    processor = multi core
    GPU = 2gb

4.Finally: FREE

A winning situation.

About 4K Editing

This is the area where you need to have horsepower under your hood. Recommended minimum requirements:

  • Processor: 4 core, 2.3 Ghz
  • Ram: 16 Gb
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M
  • Storage: SSD or 7200rpm HD

Of course the more the better!
Note: If you are editing on a basic minimum hardware equipped Laptop,
You most likely will experience overheating as your processor will be working at full throttle constantly. You may need to invest in a Laptop Cooler.
