#inktober 2017 challenge introduction

October is best known for being the start of fall and Halloween, but for a lot of artist it’s also a time for Inktober. Inktober is a simple challenge, to do a drawing with ink every day of the month and then post them online. And this year it seems that ever more artists are on-board for the challenge.

The founder of Inktober, Jake Parker writes…

I created Inktober in 2009 as a challenge to improve my inking skills and develop positive drawing habits. It has since grown into a worldwide endeavor with thousands of artists taking on the challenge every year.

Anyone can do Inktober, just pick up a pen and start drawing.

And I can second those thoughts. I like to use Inktober to not only improve my skills and to challenge what I can do, but to reinvigorate my love for making art.

So, my plan for Inktober 2017 is to create a story presented as a long panorama or scroll with some constraints to attempt if possible. Here is a rough template as to the structure of my drawn landscape, which has altered a bit at the time of this writing.

Since folks are taking about their #inktober plans, here is mine. All the #ink #drawings follow character(s) on a #journey. Trying hard to make a useful structure, but trying to plan to much. As you can see in the image (from instagram) is that I want to have the story have actual highs and lows as it builds to the ending. That has changed a bit, but more of that will be revealed in future posts.

So some of the constraints I would like to work with are…

– Cameos of Real People
– Hands and Feet
– Suggesting direction from the layout and design
– Inserted comic panels
– Suggestions from friends and family
– and Wordless Storytelling

You will have to turn into future posts to see what did and did not happen for these as well.

Here is my proof on concept video that has the continues landscape and uses comic panels (not the final story BTW)…

Proof of concept for #inktober2017. Each days drawings will form a long landscape, but work as separate drawings too. Follow along here … #inktoberjourneybk2017 #drawing #Inktober #art #challenge #october #comics #test #wip
