Typography Anatomy Explained Complete For Serif Character Knowledge
I recently search on internet some stuff about typography (like names and purpose for each part of letter) and I didn’t find what I need. Just bunch of not complete and similar content. i get an idea to do it myself and connect all part into one place. Many websites have almost identical content for typography anatomy. Some have own but not complete guide. So I make typography Anatomy Explained Complete for Serif Character Knowledge. You can here download vector, JPG, EPS and SVG file. On top of page you can place mouse over numbers to get name and purpose of letter part.
01 / Arc
Arc like it name says, there can be one or more arcs in character.
02 / Aperture
Aperture is partially enclosed space. Always is open space.
03 / Apex
Apex was part at the top where two strokes meets.
04 / Vertex
Vertex like apex but it is on bottom where two stroke meets.
05 / Arm
Arm is horizontal or upward stroke who not connected to a stroke or steam on one side. Something on both end.
06 / Ascender
Ascender paces above x height of character and it is vertical stroke of lowercase letters.
07 / Axis
Axis is imaginary line who places ftom top to bottom of leeter.
08 / Break
Break is sharp corner of some character.
09 / Bilateral Serif
Bilateral Serif placed from both side or single side of a main stoke, usually very short part.
10 / Bowl
Bowl on letter is the fully closed and rounded part of character.
11 / Bracket
Bracket job is to connect steam and serif, allmost always is curved.
12 / Counter (open)
Counter (open) like aperture but big area i character.
13 / Counter (closed)
Counter (closed) like open counter and aperture but closed area in letter.
14 / Crossbar
Crossbar is the horizontal stroke in some letters.
15 / Crotch
Crotch is angle of letter where two strokes meat but not meet corner.
16 / Descender
Descender escape bellow baseline.
17 / Eye
Eye like counter but not big, always is small closed area.
18 / Finial
Finial is curved end.
19 / Foot
Foot like it name sad, character standing on that foot.
20 / Ear
Ear is tiny part of letter, usually in upper sides.
21 / Hairline (stroke)
Hairline (stroke) most common for serif font and always is thiniest stoke in character.
22 / Head Serif
Head Serif like the serif but always in top part of letter.
23 / Juncture or Joint
Juncture or Joint is point where two stroke meets each other.
24 / Leg
Leg is always in bottom and is sloping stroke.
25 / Ligature
Ligature always is conection beetwen two or more letters.
26 / Link
Link or Neck is small stroke who connecting two part of letter.
27 / Loop
Loop is always closed stroke in character.
28 / Overhang
Overhang is curves at the bottom of letters hang slightly below the baseline.
29 / Serif
Serif is end of some strike, usualy on serif typeface.
30 / Shoulder
Shoulder is curved stroke who start from steam and pointing downward.
31 / Spine
Spine is the curving stroke from one direction to another.
32 / Spur
Spur escaping from letter in small parts, usual for decoration.
33 / Main Stroke or Stem
Main Stroke or Stem exist for main part of character and other parts is attached to steam.
34 / Stress
Stress showing transition between vertical horizontal and diagonal thick to thin transition.
35 / Tail
Tail often is decorative. Extending from bottom to one side.
36 / Tittle or Dot
Tittle or Dot is a small dot usually above a letter.
37 / Terminal
Terminal don’t have serif and it it end of stroke on character.
38 / Diagonal Stroke
Diagonal Stroke like it name says is diagonal stroke in character.
39 / Ball Terminal
Ball Terminal is circle part of the end of terminal.
