Evolve’s Mac version is officially dead

Update: Now that it is confirmed that Turtle Rock Studios has ended support for Evolve, we can confidently put the Mac version to bed. They tried their best to save the game, including a free-to-play format, but nothing could save this game.

We already knew that Evolve, the asymmetrical first-person shooter from Turtle Rock Studios, had both Mac and Linux version in the works. SteamDB already pointed to Mac and Linux builds a few months ago, but just last week they were updated again.

SteamDB leaks are far from official. That said, they are often right. Since last week, both Mac and Linux builds were encrypted too, meaning that someone is working and them and do not want you to know.

Many games are coming to the Mac this year, but Evolve would be one of the highlights. The game comes from the same developer behind the famous Left 4 Dead series. Left 4 Dead 2 is not only one of the best Mac first-person shooters, it’s also one of the best cooperative games you can find.

And Evolve is Turtle Rock’s most ambitious take on cooperative First-Person shooters. From Wikipedia:

Evolve is an asymmetrical multiplayer game, pitting four player-controlled Hunters against one alien Monster, controlled by a fifth player. The Hunters are tasked with killing the Monster; while the Monster must either kill all four Hunters, or complete a secondary objective such as destroying a human base or power plant.

Both Hunters and Monsters can use unique abilities during the game. The Monster player can kill other smaller creatures to evolve and become stronger by entering a cocoon stage, leaving itself vulnerable for a short duration. There are various power-ups that both Hunters and Monsters can obtain by killing the local wildlife. The wildlife can also attack and slow down either side.

Games leaked on the Steam DB are not an official confirmation that a game is coming to the Mac. Technically, they could just be a temporary test. However, experience tells us that the Steam Database is never wrong.

Some leaks are still rumors, such as Dark Souls or Arma 3. But most of the games spotted there did make it to the Mac, with Shadow Warrior being the latest example.

I have contacted Turtle Rock to get more information on the Mac and Linux versions of the game. So far they told me via Twitter that they don’t have any news to share, but any changes will be announced through their Twitter feed.

No release date or pricing are known, but this being a leak coming from Steam itself, you can count on Evolve becoming Steam-Play enabled and costing the same $59.99.
