REVIEW: The Vurger Co – London

The Vurger Co is pretty new on the London food scene as they’ve grown from Market Stall to Pop Up in a matter of months. Their mission is to revolutionise fast food through the power of plants – very admirable if you ask me! They take a combination of the best vegetables, seeds, nuts and legumes and aim to create the ultimate plant based burgers and sides. They’ve hosted a series of pop ups recently at The Pill Box Kitchen in London with huge hype over Instagram so I wanted to check them out for myself before it came to an end.

As a venue, The Pill Box Kitchen is a stylish and quirky local café/restaurant in Bethnal Green. It’s set in a stunning Grade II-listed building which is the former Allen & Hanbury’s pill-packing factory – hence the name! They boast a relaxed atmosphere with a menu full of ethically and sustainably sourced food – a nice little place for The Vurger Co to showcase their menu.

I was served by a really lovely lady who was able to tell me more about the burgers and ingredients. I ordered the BBQ Nut burger (£6.95) and a side of Vurger Slaw (£2.95). In my opinion, the pricing was a little high but it’s what you’d expect to pay in London. The burger patty was a spicy blend of brown rice, black beans, spiced walnuts and garlic and which meant it had a somewhat earthy, but really tasty Mexican style of flavour. Served in a soft seeded vegan brioche bun with fresh lettuce, a generous dollop of mashed avocado, and drizzled with BBQ sauce, it was a really nice combo of flavours! In contrast, I was a little disappointed by the Vurger Slaw. It was nice and crunchy with fruity undertones but it was a little bland. It definitely could have done with a little more zing! The Vurger Co also do their own range of ketchup and BBQ sauce which they had on the tables. I was already enjoying the BBQ sauce in my burger but I also tried some of their ketchup which was made with beetroot and tomatoes– very pink, very sweet, but very tasty.

The Vurger Co boasts a great service and friendly bunch of staff. They seem to be very popular as the food queue was growing fast. They served from 5-10pm and I believe they completely sold out by 8pm due to the high demand of people loving their food that evening which is always a good sign. If you’re interested in trying one of their ‘soul-satisfying’ burgers at future Pop Ups, then you can keep updated with events on their website below.

Hopefully, we’ll be seeing more of The Vurger Co! Their mission and ethos is great and I wish them all the best with their journey going forward!
