The Walking Dead universe is set to be expanded further with additional spin-off series, which could include characters we already know.

We have already seen the success of Fear The Walking Dead which, in terms of ratings, is out-shining the main series at the moment.

Fan-favorite Morgan, played by Lennie James, is the first to make the switch from The Walking Dead to Fear The Walking Dead and it seems he won’t be the only one to appear in different shows in the franchise with Scott Gimple teasing that the new spin-off shows could include characters we already know.

Gimple told The Hollywood Reporter that AMC have multiple ideas in mind for what could make a successful spin-off. “We have a bunch of different things in mind,” he said. “Some things that are really complimentary to the stuff we’re doing now and some stuff that’s far afield and very different.”

Scott Gimple then went of to tease that his plans contain the possibility to return characters to the show’s universe. Of course, this has huge potential. We could have a Negan backstory! The showrunner said, “I’m talking about different ways to tell stories, possibly with characters we know and possibly with characters we don’t [know].

Following the hugely controversial mid-season finale, a lot has happened behind-the-scenes of the drama. We have seen The Walking Dead strike a season 9 renewal, with a brand new showrunner, with AMC taking bold moves and taking Scott Gimple away from that position and making him Chief Content Officer at AMC.

The new showrunner will be former co-executive producer Angela Kang, who was promoted into this position. Angela Kang joined in The Walking Dead writing staff in Season 2 as a Story Editor. She then went on to become co-Executive Producer by Season 5 till season 8. In season 9 she will act as showrunner. No pressure.
