“Jekyll” – series review

“Jekyll” – Series Review

I was skeptical when I first heard of this show. A modern version of the classic horror novel of 6 episodes. However upon viewing it I was very pleasantly surprised.

“Jekyll” tells the story of Tom Jackman (played by James Nesbitt). A married doctor and father of two who has neglected his family and locked himself in a fortified basement flat for the purpose of restraining another “person” that seems to be inside him which shifts consciousness with him at certain times. He hires a psychiatric nurse called Katherine Reimer (played by Michelle Ryan) to monitor and assist him. The alter-ego of Tom (as observed by Katherine) is much more violent than Tom, is faster, stronger, taller and much more flirtatious and playful.

*Minor spoilers from a few episodes* While we follow the struggle of Tom to keep his alter ego contained and try to live a normal life we find out that he has kept his family a secret from him because he is afraid of what he might do to them. We also find out that a mysterious black van is monitoring them and following each of their steps. Apparently this is a mysterious and very powerful company who has been keeping an eye on them since they were discovered. *End of minor spoilers*

This has been one of the rare shows that had me completely hooked from start to finish. I was not too familiar with James Nesbitt as an actor other from his role in the Hobbit movies so I was not sure what I was in for but I must admit that his performance as Jekyll and Hyde is one of my favorite performances ever. He manages to perfectly show the “good” side of the good doctor and masterfully capture the insanity and rage of the malevolent Hyde. The supporting cast was also very excellent apart of some agents but it was no big deal.

I absolutely loved this mini Series. It is a brilliantly written adaptation of the book and I highly recommend it. It’s so addictive that you will watch it in one go. It was structured so well and a great mix of horror and drama.  I have mixed opinions on some of the stories that Moffat writes but this was one of if not my favorite work from him. Check it out below and let me know if you enjoyed it as much as I did.

Final verdict: 9/10
