Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” is a live-action remake of the animated classic that reinvents the characters from the tale whom we fell in love with but alters it to suit a contemporary audience. Luckily, there wasn’t too much of a change as the the original soundtrack remained with the addition of several new songs.
“Beauty and the Beast” is the dazzling journey of Belle, a bright, beautiful and independent young woman who is taken captive by a beast in his castle.
Despite her fears, she befriends the castle’s enchanted staff and learns to look beyond the Beast’s beastly exterior and realize the kind heart and soul of the true Prince within. She falls in love, and the rest is history…
Our verdict: we loved it. It’s all singing, all dancing and has the much loved parts of the classic. The reinvention is definitely something that works, and has been cleverly done.
Belle is played by Emma Watson, and the Beast by Dan Stevens. Other names that featured in this film include: Golden Globe nominee Ewan McGregor as Lumiere; Oscar winner Kevin Kline as Maurice; Oscar nominee Stanley Tucci as Maestro Cadenza; Oscar nominee Ian McKellen as Cogsworth; and two-time Academy Award winner Emma Thompson as the teapot, Mrs. Potts.
Directed by Oscar winner Bill Condon based on the 1991 Animated Film, “Beauty and the Beast” is produced by Mandeville Films’ David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman, with eight-time Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken, who won two Academy Awards (Best Original Score and Best Song) for the 1991 animated film.
As you can see, there were plenty of Oscar, Golden Globe and Academy Award winners/nominees – making it a strong cast.
Congratulations to Emma Watson who’s picked up her MTV’s first gender-neutral Film & Movie Award for her role in Beauty & the Best. She beat other male stars including James McAvoy and Hugh Jackman.
Speaking of her win, Watson said: “The first acting award… that doesn’t separate nominees based on their sex says something about how we perceive the human experience.”
