OPINION: On Miss Indonesia’s Trainer Sitting As Judge At Miss Grand International 2018

Many fans of beauty pageants were furious upon learning the fact that one of the judges for both the Preliminary Competition and the Finals Night is the very same “mentor”, “coach”, “trainer”, and stylist of Miss Indonesia Nadia Purwoko.

In pageants, it’s inevitable to have judges with the same nationality as the candidates. That’s already to be expected. Both Miss Universe and Miss Earth had that problem, and when the winning candidate is of the same nationality as some or one of the judges, fans would be quick to object as to fairness.

But it’s another story when the one Sitting as a judge is the very same person who mentored the candidate. How do you expect him to fairly score the candidate who would walk and project as he had precisely instructed her? It’s like Osmel Sousa or Lupita Jones judging Miss Universe and Venezuela and Mexico made it to the winners’ circle.

Miss World also had this same problem — National Directors sitting as one of the judges. And this practice should stop.

Judging pageants will never be 100% “fair” as to give scores will always be based on one’s preferences and biases. But the judging panel should be given with every semblance of credibility by hiring disinterested parties who are totally devoid of conflicts and/or vested interests.
