Trip to Greece: Antipaxos and Corfu

One of the highlights to our trip to Greece was a daytrip to the island of Anitpaxos, about a 15-minute boat ride from Paxos.

We boarded the small boat, seating about 20 people on a single, wraparound bench, in the morning (boats leave every 30 minutes) at the dock in Paxos. The water was a bit choppy that day, so we were sprayed occasionally by salt water as the boat hovered over the waves.

Arriving at Antipaxos, we could already feel the magic of the island just getting off the boat. It was one of those dreamy landscapes of clear, azure water, creamy sand beaches and white stone rugged cliffs you see in a magazine or travelogue and wish you could be transported to.

We parked ourselves on some chaise lounges for the day. I was too distracted by the sheer, physical beauty of the island to read my book. The water was warm and tranquil and I stayed in until my toes and fingertips were shriveled.

Another pleasant distraction was the intoxicating smell of smoke tinged with charcoal, spices and fresh caught fish grilling on a stone barbeque from the restaurant atop the beach. Succumbing to the aroma, we sat for lunch on a shaded terrace overlooking the beach. Lobster pasta was the special of the day and also fresh tuna. We shared a plate of fresh feta lightly drizzled with Greek olive oil, a simple but sublime dish. The lobster was huge and served with a generous portion of spaghetti in a light red sauce but that didn’t stop me from devouring the whole thing and then sucking on the extremities. Vincent was amazed by the freshness of his fresh tuna and especially enjoyed the charred edges. Sitting there and having all of our senses heightened to the max by the sun, sea, and food, it was one of those rare “Life doesn’t get much better than this” moments.

We spent the rest of the afternoon savoring every moment of our newfound paradise and reluctantly boarded the last boat back to Paxos at five o’clock.

The last day of our trip, we took the morning ferry back to spend the day in Corfu before our flight at 7PM to Paris.

We tooled around the old city, discovering ancient stone streets and plazas with wild vines growing out from the peach colored buildings. Finding an area with dozens of tourist shops, we bought local made olive oil soap and oregano. It was a hot day, so we ventured to a café and enjoyed strong iced espresso while checking out the natives. A street close to the harbor and the main square of town resembled rue de Rivoli in Paris with columns and a covered walkway.

I am so pleased to have Ann Mah as my guest this week at on A Bite of Paris. We went to Le Mistral, her favorite Paris bistro and had their signature dish, aligot, a rich, creamy mix of whipped potatoes and cheese from the Aveyron region.
