Exploring La Defense 2

After scoping out the apartment complex in Nanterre, I returned to La Defense and discovered areas and buildings I hadn’t photographed before.

I moved my camera in all directions to capture the soaring skyscrapers of brushed steel with panels of glass reflecting the brilliant blue sky and blustery clouds. A glass-covered walkway was wrapped in red iron arches, reminding me of the famous arches of Saint Louis. I enjoyed the peacefulness of La Defense, a rare quiet spot in bustling, busy Paris.

La Defense, named after the iconic statue La Defense de Paris, was erected in 1883 to remember the soldiers who defended Paris in the Franco-Prussian War. It was first established in 1958 with the Esso Tower. Office towers were constructed on and off over the next three decades with many of the worlds largest international and French companies housing their offices in the complex including Neuf Cegetel, Société Générale, Total, Aventis, Areva, and Arcelor. The tallest building, 50 stories houses AXA. La Defense spans 400 acres and has 38,000,000 square feet of office space with 1500 companies,150,000 employees, 20,000 residents, and 2600 hotel rooms.
