Get 100 bonus Airpoints Dollars when you move with Mercury

Mercury regularly offer bonus Airpoints Dollars promotions for switching over from other providers, including when you move home – targeted mainly to new customers, but also sometimes to existing.

Offer 1: Get 100 bonus Airpoints Dollars when you sign up with Mercury when moving home

Moving home? Sign up with Mercury online using promo code MOVE100AP and you can receive 100 bonus Airpoints Dollars until 31 January 2018.

This offer can also be taken advantage of by existing Mercury customers, as an added incentive to stick with them after your move.

Full terms and conditions on the offer can be found here.

Offer 2: Earn 3x Airpoints Dollars when you sign up for a 2 year fixed price plan (existing customers)

Existing Mercury customers who sign up to a 2 year fixed plan will be eligible to earn 3x Airpoints Dollars for the duration of the fixed period.

This one is a no-brainer if you were already looking to switch to a fixed plan, and works out to be an effective 1.5% rebate on your bill.

There does not seem to be an expiry date on this offer.

Full terms and conditions on the offer can be found here.

Offer 3: Get 150 bonus Airpoints Dollars and earn 2x Airpoints Dollars when you sign up for a 2 year fixed price term (new customers)

New Mercury customers who sign up to a 2 year fixed plan will be eligible to earn 2x Airpoints Dollars for the duration of the fixed period, plus 150 bonus Airpoints Dollars.

The increased Airpoints Dollars earn rate works out to be an effective 1% rebate on your bill.

There also does not seem to be an expiry date on this offer.

Full terms and conditions on the offer can be found here.

Are these good offers?

There are too many moving parts with energy companies to determine how good this offer may be compared to all others in the market.

Mercury may have other offers available that trump this one in terms of value, e.g. cash rebates.

If you’re principally shopping around for a provider that allows you to earn points, you should compare the value of this offer to the frequent Fly Buys promotions with Genesis.

Guide to earning Airpoints Dollars with Mercury

Air New Zealand Airpoints members who link their membership number to their Mercury Energy account on-line will automatically earn 1 Airpoints Dollar per $200 (including GST) spent on their Mercury account each month. This includes spend on electric and gas.

You won’t earn Airpoints Dollars on any discounts or credits applied to your bill, and any service fees or charges.

The same Airpoints membership number can be added to more than one Mercury account, provided that this is added to the Mercury Account by the authorised person (primary account holder).

The standard Airpoints Dollars earn rate is an effective 0.5% return on your bill payments, on the basis of 1 Airpoints Dollar being equal to $1 NZD when put towards an Air New Zealand flight redemption.

Airpoints for Business

If your electricity account is for a business, your business will need to register for Airpoints for Business to be ready to earn Airpoints Dollars on your Mercury bill.

If you are a Mercury Business customers who has a Time of Use, SPOT OR Large Commercial account, or you’re already an Air New Zealand Above & Beyond customer, you won’t be eligible to earn Airpoints Dollars through your Mercury account.

Summing up

The standard earn rate at 1 APD per $200 is far from Earth shattering and certainly not a reason to switch suppliers on its own.

I would recommend that those who might be interested in joining with Mercury to do their maths first. You can check out What’s My Number to see how Mercury stacks up against other suppliers.

However if you’re a loyal Mercury customer and have no intention on moving, the 3x earn rate for fixing for 2 years could be worthwhile.
