Hotel Profile: Disney’s Contemporary Resort at Walt Disney World
As one of the two original hotels at Walt Disney World, Disney’s Contemporary Resort (which opened in October 1971, along with Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort), has earned its place as a Walt Disney World visual icon.
More than any other hotel at Walt Disney World, Disney’s Contemporary Resort tends to generate the most polarizing commentary from Disney travelers. There are some travelers who feel that the property is the least “Disney” of all Disney resort hotels. While others are drawn to its bold, iconic and classic Disney stature.
Over the years I have grown more fond of Disney’s Contemporary Resort. It is an excellent Deluxe resort that has a lot going for it.
Being able to walk to and from Disney’s Magic Kingdom Park from Disney’s Contemporary Resort is a big plus.
A Location that is Second to None
First of all, its location is hard to beat — particularly for fans of the Magic Kingdom. This is the only resort hotel from which you can walk to the gates of the Magic Kingdom. This is a very convenient option, especially at the end of the night when you are coming home after watching fireworks in the park. While tens of thousands of guests line up for boats, buses and monorails, you can take a leisurely 15-minute stroll back to your room. A big benefit as far as I am concerned.

Disney’s Contemporary Resort is well known for its unique A-frame structure and large cavernous lobby. One of the big draws here is the Walt Disney World monorail, which has been whooshing through the Contemporary for decades.
The rooms at Disney’s Contemporary Resort are among the largest standard rooms that you will find at any Disney Deluxe Resort, and the views on both sides of the main tower are quite nice. Always request an upper floor to take advantage of the vistas available here.

Some of the Best Dining Options at Walt Disney World
Dining options within Disney’s Contemporary Resort are second only to those available across Seven Seas Lagoon at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort. The Contemporary Resort has an excellent offering of options for onsite dining, including everything from top-notch Character Dining (Chef Mickey’s) to superb table service dining (California Grill) and several other good options across all other levels of service.
Disney’s Contemporary Resort has an excellent range of amenities, multiple pools and splash pads, a running trail, tennis courts and even more welcome benefits above and beyond what you may expect.
