5 Liverpool bars to meet your future ex-husband in

Looking for a new haunt to pick up your future ex-husband? Here are 5 of my favourite bars in Liverpool…

Crazy Pedros

As with almost everything, I was the last person in Liverpool to get onto the Crazy Pedro’s hype and didn’t actually pay a visit until I was invited to a pizza-making workshop a few weeks ago. Now, you might be thinking “why does anyone need help making a pizza, it’s literally just dough and the good stuff lashed on top” – but before you start with your judgement, I put my entire fist through the base within ten minutes of being there, so it turns out that people do need help. Anyway, back to the bar itself; as you’ve probably guessed Crazy Pedro’s serves pizza. By the slice. Until 4am. And if that’s not enough reason to go, they’ve got a beer pong table, a beer garden that gets sun all evening and someone has written ‘snortin’ lines and shaggin’ 9s’ in the toilet – you are WELCOME.

The Smugglers Cove, Albert Dock

You know when Jack Sparrow talks about the pirate port, Tortuga? I imagine that to be exactly like The Smugglers Cove. My favourite bar in Liverpool, Smugglers, stays true to the pirate vibe right the way through to the mirrors in the toilets. They do good cocktails, good food and it’s easily my favourite place to go for date night, (if you want call drinking 5 zombies and losing my shoes ‘date night’.)

Berry & Rye

The first thing you need to know about Berry & Rye is that it’s not easy to find – I mean, that is the point of speakeasy-styled bars. The first time I went, Google had told me that it had a blacked-out shop front – so imagine my absolute fucking HORROR when I burst through the door of a closed barber shop while the owner was trying to eat his butty. Luckily someone outside saw me play-acting a raid and pointed me in the right direction between wheezing. Google was right, the shop front is completely plain, and you have to knock the anonymous door until the doorman ushers you inside if there’s room.

Inside, however, is something else! Between the dimmed lights, whiskey cocktails and candles flickering in old wine bottles, you feel like you’ve just stepped into a 1920s Chicago speakeasy.  Drinks are brought to your table, (don’t even think about going up to the bar and ruining the vibe) so you can sip your gin or whiskey cocktail while listening to the smooth music of Berry & Rye’s resident pianist.

The Shipping Forecast

Every time I mention that I’ve been to The Shipping Forecast, my dad tells me that it used to be called Wonder Bar and then laughs for 6 days straight. Anyway, The Shipping Forecast is my go-to bar to start the night; the layout means that you can hide in a corner and club neck if you’re on a date, (please don’t though) but there’s also big open tables if there’s a few of you. It’s also has live bands and club nights, if you’re into that kind of thing.

The Merchant

The Merchant was the place where I discovered that it’s actually tonic that I hate, not gin. It’s also the place where my mate, A-Laur-able made a Tory cry, so fond memories all round. I love the stripped back interiors alongside pretty florals, but the best thing about The Merchant has is the beer garden – sunshine all day and a pizza kitchen, that is literally all you need to know.

Until next time… x
