American English Kitchen and Bar, Hollywood, FL

American English Kitchen and Bar – we brought the Martinelli.

While searching for a restaurant recently, I saw several reviews of American English Kitchen and Bar in Hollywood. The menu looked intriguing, the prices seemed reasonable, and they take reservations via Open Table. Of course, we had to try it out.

Imagine my delight when I learned that the front of house manager, Mike, is someone I know from prior stints at Il Mercato in Hallandale and dba in Fort Lauderdale. In the span of two weeks we visited twice (that should tell you something). The menu was tweaked a little on each visit. One thing that I love about this menu is the choice of portion sizes: either tasting or full size. To me, a tasting size means I can also have an appetizer, and that I can try more items. Win.

THE FOOD

I’ve now enjoyed the burrata salad twice, complete with heirloom tomatoes, fresh, super creamy cheese, and micro greens. It seems likely that I will order it every time we go, as there will be many future visits. Crispy, fried, pickled green tomatoes arrive topped with blue cheese, honey mustard, and bacon confit. (I opted out of the bacon, and it was still delicious.) But the highlight of the appetizer round came in the form of tiny potato pancakes topped with BBQ lamb belly. Cholesterol be damned, I enjoyed every morsel.

The choice of entrée sizes is particularly useful for trying multiple menu items. If you plan on having an appetizer and/or dessert, the tasting size should be fine. Each protein came out perfectly cooked. From the mutton snapper with coconut curry sauce (divine) to the roasted grouper, the fish is local and fresh. NY Strip Steak seared a perfect medium rare is a thing of beauty. This one came with cauliflower puree, sautéed broccolini, and a bone marrow vinaigrette. I asked for the dressing on the side, and while it was good, I found it an unnecessary addition to the dish. On another visit, I enjoyed the flat iron steak frites, with a pile of shoestring fries.

THE ATMOSPHERE

The interior of the restaurant is lively and casual. This space housed Fulvio’s for many years. While I never really liked it as Fulvio’s, now, as American English, it is more relaxed, with a convivial atmosphere. On both occasions, we enjoyed friendly service. Everything came out as ordered, and with a smile, despite multiple special requests. In addition to the fabulous food, American English offers a well thought out wine list, wine-focused events, and corkage options.

Bottom line: If you are near Hollywood, Florida, and want dinner, check out American English. You can’t go wrong. They are open for dinner Tuesday through Saturday nights, starting at 5 PM (6 PM on Saturdays) and are located at 1900 Harrison Street, just west of Young Circle. Also, be sure to check out their special events and wine tastings.
