May 3, Day of the Cross

Day of the Cross is an annual event celebrated on May 3.

Every town or village whose name ends in 'CRUZ' (CROSS) celebrate this day, well that is how it was originally, but as is typical on the Island any excuse for a fiesta, so now days you will find that most villages on the Island celebrate this day.

Crosses are decorated by the inhabitants, flowers, seeds, fruit are just some materials used.

In some municipals there are competitions between the villages to which has the best crosses, these are taken very seriously.

The city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife celebrates in style as it is also the anniversary of the cities founding. In 1494 the Military governor at the time Fernandez de Lugo erected a wooden cross on the beach of the city to officially found the City of Santa Cruz.

Decorated crosses are placed all along the ramblas for everyone to enjoy, followed at night by a Grand Firework display.

Los Realejos municipal celebrations end with a grand firework display which is one of the most impressive in Europe and has been declared of 'National Tourist Interest', the two main streets in the town get locked into battle to see which has the best display.

History behind this date apparently comes from Emperor Constantine 1, around 4 Th century BC the night before a battle with a horde of Huns led by the famous Attila, he had a vision of an angel along with a decorated cross with a message saying 'With this sign you shall win'
The next day he led his army into battle with a decorated cross and was victorious.

Here are just a few of the celebrations taking place on this day :-
