ONE STEPPE AT A TIME

The time has come to re-enter the shed, walk over to the shelf on the back wall and pull down my backpack. Dust it off. Pack in a tent,  sleeping mat, cooking stove, GPS, first aid kit, thermals, cameras (digital and polaroid) and toothbrush. And although I will not be packing her, I will be bringing along a girl. Just as the great Australian adventurer  Alby Mangel would be accompanied by his girlfriend on his World Safaris and various exploits, I too will have the pleasure of sharing my experience with a lovely lady. My girlfriend Mieka Donald has her bag packed, complete with her fold down fishing rod and necessary tackle, and is ready for the journey.

We will begin our adventure by flying into Beijing, China. Four days later we will board a train and ride the Trans – Mongolian Railway, travelling 29 hours until we reach Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. Once in Mongolia we will trek, hitchhike and wander across this untouched landscape that`s considered to be the least densley populated country on earth. Our accomodation will consist of a tent, staying with nomad families in their gers and the odd hotel. The fishing rod will pull fresh trout out of the pristine rivers and lakes and our extremely sharp and confronting pocket knife will ward of wolves and bears up near Siberia. We will exploit and tap into one of the countries vast resources. But we have no interest in the  gold, copper or coal. But rather good old tried and proven horsepower. After all the Mongols basically invented horse riding and horses out number the human population 13 to 1. Thats 39 million to 3 million.

It’s then back to Mongolia’s historical arch nemesis China, where we will enter and travel through the ethnic minority regions of the north west until we reach Beijing. From there we will board a plane and fly west to Myanmar, or Burma as it`s otherwise known. This will be our beach holiday and will conclude our trip. We have three months.
Travel with us!
