5 of Our Favourite Things To Do in Banff (That Aren’t Skiing or Snowboarding)…

Banff is known for its phenomenal snow conditions, stunning scenery and being one of North America’s biggest ski areas, but there’s also so much to do and see other than (our number 1 favorite thing to do) skiing and snowboarding. We’ve picked out some of our favourite activities/experiences you HAVE to try on your next trip to Banff! No. Seriously…

1. The Aurora Borealis – also know as the Northern Lights.

The Aurora Borealis is the result of collisions between gaseous particles in the Earth’s atmosphere with charged particles released from the sun’s atmosphere. We can’t promise you’ll see them on your trip (they are visible from late September to March) but it’s one for the bucket list and just an incredibly awesome thing to see whilst you’re in Banff – if you’re lucky!

2. Dog sledding – prepare yourself for the cute factor…

It’s basically compulsory to go dog sledding when in Canada – if not only for the fact that the huskies are ridiculously adorable – but it’s also a great way to see the Canadian Rockies the old fashioned way. You’ll get to meet your pack of huskies first (this is when you’ll get to have lots of cuddles) and then it’s time to get cosy and enjoy the ride…

3. Johnston Canyon ice walk – it’s not as scary as it sounds…

Walk through the breath-taking frozen waterfalls of the Johnston Canyon – you’ll get the chance to explore the lower and upper levels via the suspended steel catwalks which are built into the rock walls. You’ll learn all about the history of how of Johnston Canyon was formed, plus the frozen water creates beautiful ice sculptures so you can capture some amazing photography too!

4. Hot springs – the perfect post-ski relaxer!

Banff’s world famous Upper Hot Springs are a must! They’re not only perfect for recovering after a long day of skiing or boarding but also an amazing setting to watch the snow fall on the surrounding peaks. We hear the morning is the best time for a relaxing soak!

5. Icefields Parkway tour – not keen on heights? This one’s for you!

Enjoy some fresh glacier air – the Columbia Icefields offer a range of guided tours. There’s plenty to see including Bow Lake, Crowfoot Mountain, Peyto Lake, Mistaya Canyon and the Athabasca Glacier. If you are feeling daring, you can look down on the glacier from above on the glass-bottomed Skywalk!
