The Best Travel Gear 2018: All You Need for Your Next Adventure

Back to the blog

If there’s anything you’d like to add to the list, something that you always have with you when traveling, let me know! I’d love to hear from you.

This is a list of things that I Recommend for traveling:

The Best Travel Gear

Travel Bags & Cubes

Backpack 60L

Ditch the suitcase and get a backpack instead. I can’t recommend it enough if you want to be on the move! 60L is more than enough for me as I pack light. I only bring clothes for 1-2 weeks and then wash along the way in hostels etc. Backpacks come in all shapes, sizes and prices so choose according to your journey.

I recommend something like the Suretex Hiking Backpack 50/60L

Everyday Backpack

A smaller backpack for everyday and carry-on purposes. Choose a size that matches the stuff you plan on carrying when you’re out exploring new places, cities, restaurants etc.

While i personally use a cute little backpack I bought in Thailand, I recommend something like the Amazonbasics Classic Backpack. It’s simple, cheap and does the job for most.

Photography Backpack

If you carry a lot of gear for photography I recommend something like the Lowepro Flipside 300 AW II. It’ll fit both a DSLR camera, extra lenses, flash, etc and it opens from the rear so it’s practically theft-proof. It’ll even fit a small laptop or pad and comes with a rain cover. They come in different sizes if you need more or less room.

Packing Cubes

These cheap little organizer bags makes such an enormous difference! If you don’t have a set, buy some right now. They make packing and unpacking so much easier, and when you’re on the move often like me, that’s really worth 25$!

I recommend Gnotex Travel Cubes but take a scroll around Amazon and find your best match.

Dry Bag

A dry bag will keep your precious things from getting wet and dirty in any situation! I recommend using a dry bag as your everyday-bag for days when you’re on the water or by the beach.

I bought my dry bag in The Philippines but The Earth Pak has awesome reviews on Amazon.

Toiletry Bag

Obviously, this is for all your toiletries, make-up etc. Like all other bags, there’s hundreds of different designs so scroll Amazon and pick the one you like best.

My recommendation is to get something waterproof like this one from Trevogue

TSA Approved Lock

A TSA approved lock is a lock that airport security personal can open with a special key if they suspect you’re bringing unwanted goods. They are in their right to break open any lock on your bags if there’s any suspicion.

Personally, I don’t put anything I can’t afford to lose in my check-in bag!

Travel Electronics

Unlocked Phone

Though it may seem obvious for most, make sure your phone is unlocked so you can buy and use local sim cards. It’s the easiest way to get online and keep your loved ones updated on your adventures!

It doesn’t have to be the newest model, but recommend a phone with a good camera for those in-the-moment shots, something like an Iphone 6 or a Samsung Galaxy S7.

Camera

If you’re anything like me, you’ll want to bring a proper camera for those epic shots. Some people are religious as to which brand are the best but do your research and find a camera that fits you and your needs. I personally use an older Canon DLSR but I’d recommend you invest in something newer if you’re in the market.

The Sony A6000 is a compact, highly acclaimed camera with a decent price tag.

GoPro Action Camera

For snorkeling, diving, kayaking, skydiving, racing, you name it – You need an action camera! I use the GoPro Hero 4 which I highly recommend and couldn’t live without. However, GoPro just recently launched the brand-new GoPro Hero 2018 which is a decently priced version of the much more expensive Hero 6!

Powerbank

For charging your phone, camera and other gadgets when you’re on-the-go! This little gadget has proved an essential in my bag over the years. I personally use and recommend the RAVPower 16750mAh powerbank.

Tip: Bring an extra cord for both Iphone and Android. It could save you and your fellow travelers in desperate times.

Computer

If you’re working, editing photos or videos while traveling, a computer could be an essential tool. If you don’t necessarily need it, don’t bring it. It’s actually pretty impractical to travel with at times.

Computers comes in all shapes and sizes and it’s impossible to recommend any one computer to everyone. Scroll through Amazons computer section to find one that matches your needs or contact me for personal recommendations.

Headphones / Earbuds

For music when you’re on the move! Not a lot of description needed for this item. I use my standard Iphone earbuds but I found these on Amazon that are bluetooth and claim to be waterproof. That’s pretty cool!

Diginex Bluetooth Earbuds

Plug Adapter

A universal travel plug adapter will let you connect your electronics anywhere in the world. I’ve been using the old version of this adapter without the USB connection so it looks like I’m in for an upgrade too!

VCOO Worldwide Travel Adapter

Multi USB Charger Station

For charging multiple USB powered devices at the same time. Phones, cameras, headphones etc. This will prove worthy when you’re limited to charging things in your plug adapter!

RAVPower USB Charger Station

Portable Bluetooth Speaker

Have a party anywhere! Portable speakers have gained a lot of popularity these last few years and they deserve it too. It’s impressive the sound that comes out of these little speakers.

This speaker from JBL is waterproof, sturdy and powerful!

Mobile Wifi Router

A mobile wifi router can be a great idea if you want to share data to multiple devices from one SIM. Simply buy a local SIM with a data plan, plug it in the router and connect your phone, laptop etc to it. Simple as that!

This router from Huawei is unlocked and offers 4G LTE speeds to up to 10 devices

The Best Travel Gear

Other Travel Gadgets

Micro Fiber Towel

Hostels and other cheap accommodation often don’t provide towels, so bringing your own is a great idea if you’re traveling on a budget like me. Micro fiber towels are ultra absorbent and dry quickly, making it perfect for a life on the move.

Silicone Bottles

These little bottles can be a great help for shampoo, conditioner, lotion etc. This set from Kitdine comes with a little see-through bag making it perfect for carry-on purposes too.

Luggage Scale

If you’re unsure of your bag’s weight or always repacking at the check-in counter cause it’s too heavy, a luggage scale could be a great help for you! It’ll ensure you’re on point, never having to pay extra at the counter or book too much.

Tarriss Jetsetter Scale

Paperclips

This one is a bit unusual, I realize that, but hear me out! Instead of the pin that came with your phone (the one to pop your SIM out) you can just as easily use a paperclip in the right size. Chances are you’ll loose the pin at some point cause it’s so little and you move a lot, but keeping paperclips in a few different places will ensure you can always switch back to your old sim.

The Best Travel Gear

Travel Gear For Moving

Comfortable Clothing

This may seem obvious to many but when you’re traveling long distances, comfortable clothing goes a long way. Wear something stretchy, comfy and possibly something with a few pockets for travel documents etc.

A cheap hoodie goes a long way and even serves well as a pillow!

Travel Pillow

Another item that comes in hundreds of different shapes, sizes and prices! Again, scroll through Amazon and pick whichever one you desire.

This here is a cheap travel pillow for us on a budget.

Water Bottle

Any water bottle will do the trick here honestly. Almost every airport in the world has filtered water stations so you can fill up without having to spend money on water.

Always remember to empty your bottle when going through security. If they can’t  empty it there, they’ll either take it or make you go back, find a place to empty it and get back in line.

Ear Plugs

Ear plugs works great to mute (to some degree) your surroundings if you want some peace and quiet or maybe a nap! Some higher-end airlines will provide them for you, but they’re meant for one-time use only, hence you’ll probably need more if you’re traveling further with bus, train etc.

Eye Mask

An eye mask falls into the same category as ear plugs really, great for napping or whatever reason you might need to sleep in bright conditions. Again, some airlines do provide them and you’re allowed to take them with you if you want.

Headphone Jack Splitter

This little gadget is great for you and your travel buddy if you’re watching the same movie or want to listen to the same music. It simply allows you to connect 2 sets of headphones to the same phone, pad, computer etc. Simple, smart!
