What is Muharram

Significance of Muharram in Islam:

Muharram is one of the four months that have been described as “sacred months” by Allah.  The word Muharram is derived from Haram which means illegal. This month is so close to Allah that Allah made it Haram to fight in this month. Allah has called Muharram to be the most sacred month after the month of Ramadan. There is great reward for performing good deeds in the month of Muharram. Likewise, bad deeds also multiply in sin in Muharram. Allah says in the Holy Quran: –

“Four of them (Zil-Qadah, Zil-ijjah, Muharram and Rajab) are sacred.” (Surah At-Tawbah: 36)

About the sanctity of Muharram, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

“The best of fasts besides the month of Ramadan is the fasting of Allah’s month of Muharram.”

Apart from being one of the holiest months, Muharram also marks the start of the Islamic year, Hijri.

Important events that took place in Muharram:

There are many important events that took place in the month of Muharram, particularly on the 10th of Muharram. When Hazrat Adam (AS) disobeyed Allah and listened to Iblis, Allah punished Hazrat Adam (AS) and Hazrat Hawwa by abandoning them from Paradise. They spent years after years wandering on Earth pleading for forgiveness from Allah. It was the 10th of Muharram when Allah finally answered their supplication and forgave them.

Hazrat Ayub (AS) was tried by Allah as he suffered from a terrible skin disease. Allah had given him abundant wealth, love of family and good health. However, he got infected with a dreadful skin disease. All his wealth was gone by and he became bedridden for almost eighteen years. Then it was the 10th day of Muharram that he got cured.

When Hazrat Nuh (AS) became disappointed with the people of Israel, Allah ordered Hazrat Nuh (AS) to build a huge ark and fill it with food and drink supplies and pairs of animals. Then Allah ordered Hazrat Nuh (AS) and the people who listened to him to sail in the ark. The disbelievers were destroyed by a terrible storm sent by Allah. Finally the ark came to rest on the 10th of Muharram at Mount Judi.

It was the 10th of Muharram when Allah drowned the Pharaoh of Egypt and saved Hazrat Moosa (AS) and the people of Israel from his tyranny.

Battle of Karbala:

It was the month of Muharram when the fierce Battle of Karbala took place. The battle was fought between the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) Hazrat Imam Hussain and Yazid, the Umayyad Caliph. Imam Hussain had a small group of supporters that consisted mainly of family members and a few loyal friends. On the other hand, Yazid had a huge army of thousands of soldiers by his side. Yazid deceived Imam Hussain and captured him and his small group including young children and women.

What was more tyrannical was the fact that they beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his kinfolk were denied water supply for three days in the sweltering heat of Karbala. In spite of such harsh and inhuman conditions, Imam Hussain and his small group refused to bow down in front of falsehood.  On the 10th of Muharram, the forces of Yazid brutally martyred Imam Hussain. However, Imam Hussain remains alive in the heart of every Muslim as the brave leader of Islam and beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) who stood firm and dauntless on the guided path.

Conclusion:

Muharram for Muslims all over the world is a month of profound reflection. So Muslims must observe this month with great sanctity. They must focus more on doing good and refraining from that which is forbidden by Allah.
