There is no point in coming to Jaisalmer if you don’t go for the Desert Safari. For this very reason the Sam Sand Dunes is becoming a major attraction for tourist who wish to ‘loose’ themselves in the Thar Desert. Sam has vast magnificent sweep of stretching sand dunes with scarce vegetation.

The band of dunes is about 2 KM long and is definitely one of the most picturesque in the region. Some camel safaris camp here, but many more people just roll in for sunset, to be chased across the sands by tenacious camel owners offering short rides.

The Sam Sand dune is located at the outskirts of Jaisalmer, at least 42 kilometres away. You can join a camel caravan from Jaisalmer and ride along as it takes you into the heart of the desert, and take shelter in a camp and enjoy the solitude and see the Golden Sun setting in a Golden horizon.

At night you can set up a camp fire with your fellow tourists and star gaze and enjoy the local rustic music and dance.

Things to Do

You can enjoy a lot of adventurous activities in the dunes. You can opt for camel safari, jeep Safari ,Dune bashing etc. You can enjoy the solitude with afternoon sun setting in the horizon. The hot , dry stretch of white sand comes to life suddenly after sunset as it transferred into a cultural hub accompanied by the local dance and music.

At night you can go for the swiss camps and enjoy the local food and hospitality or light a camp fire and just lie down on the sand and star gaze!!!

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit the Sam sand dunes is during the month of October to March. In the month of February, the festival is conducted to show case the cultural heritage of Rajasthan which includes various competitions, puppet shows, races, Biggest Mustache show and various local events.

The best time to reach Sam sand dunes is around evening (sunset) at around 4-7 PM or early morning, during sunrise time of 4 to 6 AM.

Air

You can reach the Sam sand dunes from Jaisalmer Airport.

Train

Two trains are operational from Old Delhi by which u can reach Jaisalmer. The Delhi-Jaisalmer Express and the Corbett Park Link Express. Both the trains have A.C. compartments.

Each Sunday the Luxury Train Palace on Wheels stops at Jaisalmer . Once you reach the station , you can always take an auto ride to the heart of the city. In addition, there local and Express trains also between Jaisalmer and Jodhpur.

Road

A daily bus runs from Jodhpur by the Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation.
