8 DIY Nourishing Hair Oil Recipes That Won’t Weigh Your Extensions Down

Hair can get dry and brittle, especially in the the summer months that are coming up. All that beaching, swimming and sunbathing can affect you extensions negatively. Continue reading to find out what mixture of natural oils are safe to apply to your extensions to repair and rejuvenate them.

1. COCO COOL

Ingredients:

  • 2 Tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon epsom salt or magnesium flakes

Directions:

  1. Combine all ingredients and whisk/blend well (I used an immersion blender). You may have to heat the coconut oil slightly to get it in liquid form.
  2. Epsom salt will still be somewhat gritty but will dissolve and work in to hair once applied.
  3. Over a sink or shower, massage oil through the hair and scalp. Put a shower cap on (or old towel) and leave on for up to 30 minutes.
  4. In the shower, rinse well, then shampoo. If still oily, massage a small amount of baking soda through the hair to remove or use dry shampoo after the shower.

2. MAYO UP!

Ingredients:

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

  • Tea Tree Oil
  • Castor Oil
  • One Egg
  • Hair Mayo
  • Coconut Oil

Directions:

  1. Start with three tablespoons of hair mayo, one tablespoon of coconut oil, one teaspoon of tea tree oil, and one egg. Use a fork to mix the ingredients until there are no lumps evenly.
  2. After you shampoo your extensions, towel-dry the majority of water from the hair. Then use your hands to apply your DIY deep conditioner to the extensions. Comb the mixture through to ensure even distribution. Place your extensions in a plastic bag for 1 hour.
  3. Thoroughly rinse the hair with warm to hot water and blow dry.

3. HONEY I’M HOME

Ingredients:

  • Honey
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Directions:

  1. Mix 4 oz of honey with three tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil.
  2. Mix thoroughly with a fork until the mixture is smooth. Apply this to freshly shampooed and towel dried hair.
  3. Allow your extensions to deep condition in a bag for at least an hour before rinsing out.

4. DROP THE EGG

Ingredients:

  • 3 eggs

Directions:

  1. Crack three eggs in a bowl and whisk them until the mixture is completely smooth.
  2. Apply this treatment to freshly shampooed and towel-dried extensions.
  3. Sit your extensions in a bag and allow them to condition for at least an hour before rinsing.
  4. Use your favorite conditioner to co-wash the hair if there is a lingering smell of eggs.

5.  COCO FOR COCONUTS

Ingredients:

  1. Coconut Oil

Directions:

  1. Apply it on your locks and leave it for at least 30 minutes or more to set in.
  1. For best results, you can slightly heat the oil first before applying it.
  2. Rinse it well afterwards since this oil is heavier than most, but no worries if you have a little residue on your strands coconut oil serves as a great heat protectant as well.

6. JAMAICAN ME CRAZY

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp Jamaican Black Castor Oil
  • 1 tbsp Cold-Pressed Coconut Oil
  • 6 drops Lavender Essential Oil
  • 6 drops Rosemary Essential Oil

Directions:

  1. In a bowl, combine all the ingredients to get a smooth blend.
  2. Massage this oil blend into your scalp for about 15 minutes and then work it through the length of your hair. Leave it on for an additional 30 minutes.
  3. Wash your hair with a mild sulfate-free shampoo and then proceed to condition.
  4. After you are done washing your hair, squeeze the excess water out of it using a towel.
  5. Let your hair air dry.

7. THE WORKS

Ingredients:

  • 2 ounces coconut oil
  • 1 ounce castor oil
  • 1 ounce apricot kernel oil
  • 12 drops rosemary essential oil
  • 6 drops lavender essential oil
  • 6 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 6 drops clary sage essential oil

Directions:

  1. This is so simple. Measure out all the ingredients into a measuring cup (one that shows ounces), and then pour into your container of choice. Shake well. That’s all!

8. FROM MOROCCO WITH LOVE

Ingredients:

  • 1 ounce glass bottle with dropper
  • 1 ounce Argan oil
  • 1/2 tsp vegetable glycerin
  • 10 drops sandalwood essential oil
  • 5 drops lemon essential oil

Directions:

  1. Pour all the ingredients into the bottle. Shake well. Shake before using.
  2. To use: Drop a 3 or 4 drops onto your fingers before smoothing through the lower third of your hair.

Peppermint oil is an anti-inflammatory with antiseptic properties. It reduces scalp dandruff, regulates oil production and balances pH and stimulates blood circulation to promote hair growth.

Rosemary contains powerful antioxidants that encourage thickness and shine.

Tea Tree essential oil is anti-microbial and anti-inflammator. Tea tree can help reduce itchiness, dandruff and rough skin patches.

Clary Sage helps to regulate oil production and make dry, frizzy hair more manageable.

Lavender can improve blood circulation and has been shown to slow down hair loss. It’s a very calming oil which may reduce itchiness, redness and skin irritations.

Chamomile oil is anti-inflammatory and soothing which is helpful for reducing itchy and flaky scalp.

Juniper Berry has antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and astringent properties. This oil helps regulate oil production to promote a healthy balance of oil on your scalp. Too much oil leaves your hair greasy and not enough oil leaves your hair dry.

Geranium is another great oil for skin and scalp health. It can help strengthen hair follicles to reduce hair loss.

Lemongrass is antibacterial which promotes hair health.

Hair extensions need extra care and attention compared to our real tresses. Unlike our natural locks, they don’t the same oil and nutrients that keep our natural hair so full of life. One of the best ways to keep them in good condition is to pamper them with one (or all) of these DIY deep conditioners.
