Postcards from The Pousada of Faro: Palácio de Estoi, Algarve

The Pousada de Faro is an 18th century rococo-style Portuguese palace with French-style gardens, located in the village of Estoi near the city of Faro in the Algarve.

The property changed hands a number of times between aristocratic families until it was sold to the Municipality of Faro in 1987 after the last descendent passed without heirs. The small village of Estoi couldn’t keep up with the cost of maintenance and the palace was closed to the public until 2008, after the Pestana Hotel Group renovated the building into an historic pousada hotel.

It reminded me a great deal of another pousada, the Palácio de Freixo in Porto:

The grounds are not yet fully restored, but you can visit the historic part of the pousada without being a guest and see the vision of its Portuguese restoration architect, Gonçalo Byrne, come to life.
