Summertime with grandkids

Welcome back to my blog page. Two of our grandchildren came to Mexico for their summer Vacation.

These two have been visiting with us over the past 4 summers.

This year their trip to visit took them to Mexico.   Where we introduced them to a new culture, Mayan/Mexican.

They got to see a couple of the Mayan ruins in Tulum and Cozumel.  A great history lesson even with the weather unbearably hot.   They did take on the Adventure with good attitudes and learned a few things along the way.

Lot of Mexican shopping was done.   They loved how they could haggle with the shopkeeper to get the price down a little.   Everything was all in good fun.   Our grandson, Max, had his eyes shopping for hand fans.  Yes, this 6 year old boy was shopping for fans.   He found 7 beautifully painted fans.   The fans came in very handy on those boiling hot days.  When I would ask to use one, he would give me that big smile of his.    Keira, on the other hand, was more conservative with her spending.   She bought a jacket, sunglasses, backpack and wallet with money left over.

Lots of ice cream and pizza was eaten.  Señor Frog’s both in Cozumel and Playa Del Carmen were probably their favorite places to stop for a rest.   It’s something about eating ice cream with a balloon hat on your head.

We had lunch in Tulum along the beach one afternoon after a quick stop at the beach.  While Max and I took a dip in the cool water, Keira and John went walking.    Keira found a new adventure.  She enjoyed climbing rocks.  Big boulders which mounted several feet high and taking pictures from the top of the mound.

The kids and their mom had the adventure of swimming with dolphins at the facility located here in Puerto Aventuras.  At first, Max was a little unsure about swimming that close to a dolphin.  Eventually he overcame the fear and posed for pictures with the dolphin up against him.   Keira was ready to be adventurous, she swam up and played.

Lots of adventures

One of their favorite things was to ride the ferry from Playa del Carmen over to Cozumel.   We did that several times over the weeks they visits.   It didn’t matter if we sat inside on the ferry where it was Air Conditioned or topside to get the breeze blowing in your face, it was all fun for them.

A special treat was taking them to a Mayan family’s home to spend the day.   They interacted with people of a different culture and who couldn’t speak English except for one person.   The Mother demonstrated making tamales in her outside cooking area.    Max played with the other children and introduced them to the inside of the air conditioned car.   I’m sure the air conditioning in the car was something those kids don’t experience often.

Both got to swim in a cenote located in a bat cave.   It was a very large cave and you could see the bats flying around.   The water in the cenote was extremely cold.  Just like all children, they went in full body into the icy water  and enjoyed the fun.    We did this adventure several times.   Max would swim in the water no matter how cold.  Keira was happy just with taking pictures.

What is a vacation without swimming in the beautiful Carribbean Sea.   We spend several afternoons soaking in the sun and lounging in the cold, blue water.

The kids met several Mexican/Mayan people that we have associated with over the past year.  They saw how the local Mexicans live in this area.   They had a good learning vacation in Mexico.

The memories of good times between grandchildren and grandparents are “Treasures in Life”.

If you ask Keira how was her vacation, with her beautiful smiling face, she will say “Great”.   She is already planning her 2018 summer with us.

Dianne
