Babiya : The Vegetarian Crocodile Guardian of Ananthapura Temple

An ancient Hindu Temple of Kerala name Ananthapura Lake Temple situated in amidst of the lake resides in a village of Anathapura. This temple is believed to be the authentic seat of Ananthapadmanabha Swami.

Babiya feeds only vegetarian food, i.e. a rice and jaggery Prasad is given by the priest of the temple. The prime thing about the crocodile is that he does not harm anyone, including fishes who live in the pond.

According to the temple priests, there is only one crocodile at a time in a lake, if one dies, another appears naturally and the startling thing is that the temple lake is not connected with any other lake, river, or pond. According to the very old men of the temple, Babiya is the third crocodile in this lake.

In 1945, one British soldier shot dead the crocodile, but soon after the death of the first crocodile, another crocodile appeared in the tank. The soldier who killed the crocodile was dead within a few days after the death of crocodile by a snake-bite.

There is one more interesting tale about the guardian crocodile. Once a true devotee of Lord Vishnu, name Sree Vilvamangalathu Swami was doing penance for his deity Lord. While he was doing prayer, Lord Krishna comes in the embodiment of a little boy and start teasing him.

The saint got angry and pushed the boy and immediately the boy disappeared in the cave, the entrance of which is still guarded by the crocodile.
