Hostels are an opportunity to find accommodation at a cheap rate, all over the world. They are also a chance to meet a whole bunch of amazing, potential travelling friends or at least have some great social fun during your stay!

When you stay in a hostel, a lot of the time you have a choice between a private room or a dorm room. A private room gives you the privacy of a hotel room with more interaction and the dorm room gives you a much bigger social experience. The choice of which room you choose, depends on how little privacy you feel that you can deal with.

Hostels can vary in quality and sometimes safety so therefore, it is really important to do your research before you go.

I have put together a list of top rated and interesting hostels for you to have a look at.

1. Soul Kitchen Hostel, St Petersburg, Russia

Soul Kitchen Hostel is a colourful and funky building dating back to 1863 and has amazing views of the Moyka River.

Inside, you will find cabin-style bunk bed dorms with a choice of single sex or mixed and you also have a choice of a private room with ensuite, river views or fireplaces.

There are 2 relaxed, laid-back lounges and a communal kitchen and dining area.

2. Yes! Lisbon, Lisbon, Portugal

Yes Lisbon in Portugal, is decked out with super funky decor and is absolutely raved about by everyone who stays there!

The hostel runs activities that you can partake in such as walking tours and pub crawls. The activities create an extra opportunity for you to socialise with your fellow travellers and see Lisbon in the process. They also have top notch food at cheap prices that you can indulge in for any meal of the day.

3. Lavender Circus Hostel, Budapest, Hungary

Lavender Circus Hostel is a vintage walk through time!

Everywhere you look there are paintings, lights, furniture and accessories that all come together to create a warm, inviting and unique hostel with an old school charm.

If you are wanting some fresh air and relaxation, there is an outdoor terrace that you can pull out a book and a cuppa and take in the views of Budapest or if you are looking to explore, the hostel is opposite the Hungarian National Museum and in walking distance of Budapest Castle Hill, the Parliament House, Gresham Palace and spectacular Andrássy Avenue.

4. Kadir’s Tree House, Olympos, Turkey

Most of us grew up wishing that we had a tree house in our backyards.. Some of you were lucky enough to actually have one!

Olympos, Turkey is the home of Kadir’s Tree House and to get down to the amazing turquoise beaches, all you have to do is climb down a rope ladder.

5. Hostel Fair, Belgrade, Serbia

Hostel Fair is a modern and trendy space with lots of areas to mingle with others.

Bright yellow beanbags and comfy couches mean that after a hard day of travelling, you can come back and seriously chill!

The hostel is located right opposite the Belgrade Fair and 5 minutes travel time to Ciganlija (Belgrades beach oasis) and 10 minutes to Skadarlija (the bohemian quarter) and Kalemegdan (epic medieval fortress)

6. The Red Boat Malaren, Stockholm, Sweden

What better way to see Stockholm than right on the water!

Anchored at Riddarfjärden Bay of Lake Mälaren in central Stockholm, The Red Boat Malaren is a hostel about 2 boats.

Cadiz is a small peninsula in the southwest parts of Spain.

Casa Caracol is a chilled out, laid-back style of hostel with the perfect rooftop for a siesta or relaxing in a hammock.

Fauzi Azar Inn is an extremely unique hostel, set in an Arab mansion that dates to over 200 years old.

Besides the amazing architecture, hand-painted ceilings, turkish marble floors and limestone courtyards, you can also get endless Arabic coffee, herbal teas and cakes for free.

You can choose between a dorm or a guestroom and the staff run tours every morning that you can join.

9. Capsule Hotel Asahi Plaza Shinsaibashi, Japan

 

At Capsule Hotel, you get a ‘block’ to sleep in that is 2m by 1m and you have your own power and temperature controls within your capsule.

Facilities at Asahi Plaza Capsule Hotel include, game machines, a mah-jong table and a room with Japanese comics. Low- and high-temperature saunas are also available.

10. The Aydinli Cave Hotel, Goreme, Turkey

The Aydinli Cave Hotel is run by a family in Goreme, Turkey and is carved out of the side of the Cappadocia rock.

From the rooms and the rooftop terrace, you have incredible views over Goreme while enjoying your breakfast and when you tuck in for the night, you have the natural beauty of the rock and can enjoy a nice bath.. maybe with a glass of vino?

The owners are always more than happy to offer their services and tours as required.

11. Railway Square YHA, Sydney, Australia

At Railway Square Yha, you can rent a sleeping carriage as well as lounge by the pool or dine in the cafe/restaurant.

The hostel is conveniently located right next to Central Station so it is easy to get almost anywhere you’d like to go.

12. Jumbo Stay, Stockholm, Sweden

In Stockholm, Sweden, you can stay in an actual Jumbo Jet with Jumbo Stay.

They have room options between 1 and 4 people and have flat screen TVs. Some rooms even have private bathrooms.

The hostel also has a communal balcony above the cockpit which offers runway views.

It’s also one of the rare hostels that have their own line of merchandise that you can purchase such as mugs, slippers and beanies!
