Guide to Traveling to Aruba on a Budget

Now, I have written many articles about travel, since traveling is my passion. But Aruba is in a league of its own.

My parents visited Aruba 22 times, and since my Dad has passed away, I make sure my Mom still travels to “their place”. It was not difficult to see why they fell in love with this island, for Aruba is totally enchanting. From the desert, to the beaches, to the hotels, to the restaurants, to the utter atmosphere of relaxation, Aruba stands alone in the world of travel. Personally, I have been to Aruba five times, and each time I vow to return. Imagine seeing friendly iguanas walking everywhere. They love to eat lettuce and range in size from 6 inches to 4 feet long. The weather in Aruba is unlike any weather on earth. Aruba is outside ethe hurricane belt, and very close to South America, near the equator. The most beautiful aspect of their weather is the trade winds that blow all year round. So, even on a hot summer day in August, (when I usually arrive), the weather is glorious. The water is clear, calm, and sooooooo inviting. Please go, and I promise you won’t ever regret it. The only negative comment I ever heard about Aruba was from a friend who said Aruba was his favorite place in the world except the trade winds knocked over his beer.

You must check airfare prices consistently, especially in the wee hours of the night. I have been able to save hundreds of dollars doing this as airfare prices fluctuate big time. Travel off season if you can which is during our summer. Hotel and airfare prices are much less during this time. Now, you can choose to stay at an all-inclusive hotel, but I don’t recommend it. Why??? The food in Aruba is to die for, and I would rather see you pay less for a hotel and save that money for a few restaurants. Recently, we stayed at the Allegro Hotel or Occidental Grand, which is an all-inclusive, but we paid only for the hotel accomodations. Many people were envious at our ability to eat in Aruban restaurants that are world famous. Remember, eat a light breakfast, (although this was included with our price), and a snack for lunch. Then you can afford dinner out with the money you saved during the day. Believe me, it is well worth the sarifice.

Don’t miss “The California Lighthouse” which has the most equisite view of a sunset you will ever see. If you want to save money, then just go to the bar at sunset, and go elsewhere for dinner (such as McDonald’s). I will tell you, that their lasagne is fantastic! Bring your camera, because this restaurant is on a cliff by the coast that overlooks the island. As the sun sets and night falls, the lights go on, and you will see something you have never viewed before. Several years ago there was a goat and his family who walked up the cliff to visit the patrons of the restaurant. The owners of the Lighthouse would provide breadsticks to feed the goats. This was a thrill of a lifetime. I have heard that the head goat has passed on, and his followers have been reluctant to go it alone. Perhaps, when you visit, you will see his family. Another fantastic restaurant is “Papiemento”, which is an Aruban landmark. Sit pool side with candlelight, in a tree lighted, outdoor establishment. The food is incredible! Many dishes are served in pots with flames so you can cook them as you like. Another must stop is “The Buccanneer” which is a fabulous restaurant that is located in a sunken ship. The walls are an aquarium, and the food is totally, authentic. Imagine dining where the chef comes out to sit with you, while the turtles and sharks swim alongside. Also, being so close to South America, there are several Argentine restaurants that are incredible. “El Gaucho” has been on the top of everyone’s list for many years. In additon, a new restaurant, Tango Argentine Grill, has opened that includes Argentine tango dancing while you eat. Both are sure to please.

Try to secure a hotel on the beach. All the hotels are wonderful; just see what best suits your budget. I highly recommend renting a car one day to see Baby Beach. The water is only 3 feet high and extremely calm, with the best snorkeling ever!!! We have met many travelers from France and South America at this beach. Another great experience is to try horseback riding. My eldest son and I had the ride of our lives. We galloped along the beach as can only be seen in movies, stopped to swim in a private lagoon, and rode through a national park. If you budget, you can do it. Other than that, spend your days on the beach, for there is nothing like it. You can save money by making your vacation 4-5 nights instead of a week. We have done this, and it is just fine, for my family always wants more time which is proof of a perfect vacation.

Please save your pennies and travel to Aruba during that summer. That should give you time to start saving now.
If you do go there, please let me know how much you loved it. Maybe, I can meet up with you, because just writing about Aruba, gets me in the mood to see it again. Enjoy!!!!!!
