Thru Hiking the Lone Star Hiking Trail — Announcement

I have some exciting news to share! Ok, it is exciting for me anyway! I am finally making my thru-hike of the Lone Star Hiking Trail announcement known! This coming March my 16-year-old son and I will be thru-hiking the Lone Star Hiking Trail here in Texas as a way for me to do a gear shakedown for my upcoming 2020 Appalachian trail thru-hike!

I will do a complete 411 on the Lone Star Hiking Trail after I complete it, however, here are the basics:

  • 96 miles long (or 128 if you also do the loops)
  • located in East Texas
  • longest continuous trail in Texas
  • no resupply points (will need to cache food and water)
  • water supply could be limited, will depend on rainfall (so we will be caching water along the trail before we set out just in case).
  • weather for March is unpredictable. Could be in the upper 70’s for highs or like last year in the upper 30’s for highs some days. Ok so last year was a crazy year for weather, but you never know!
  • section of the trail is closed and the only way around it is to have someone pick you up and drive you around to the other side of the lake (the bridge is what is closed). There is also another section that is closed, but as long as river level is low you can wade across it, otherwise, there is a long, not marked detour.

While most of my gear has been taken care of (except for my sleeping bag that I have yet to buy and some odds and ends) my son still needs a lot of his own gear. Thankfully Christmas is coming up, so he plans on asking for those items for Christmas. The main thing he needs is a sleeping bag which will probably need to be custom made. He is 15 right now and is 6′ 3″ and still growing! EEK!!!!

I will be doing daily video’s from the trail, so make sure you have subscribed to my YouTube Channel! I will also be posting to my Instagram and Facebook page (as well as posting daily on the blog, maybe).

We plan on taking our time (how else will I take a million pictures of the same thing) so our plan is to be out there 7-8 days.

As we get closer I will post a gear list.

If anyone else has thru-hiked the Lone Star Hiking Trail, I would love to hear your suggestions, so please comment below and let me know!
