A Day of Service…Remembering MLK, Jr.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is a way to transform Dr. King’s life and teachings into community service that helps empower and strengthen local communities.

Martin Luther King Day is a United States Federal Holiday, that is celebrated annually on the third Monday of January, and is also known as King Day or MLK Day.

In some states, it is also commonly referred to as Civil Rights Day or Human Rights Day. In recent years it is increasingly seen to be a ‘Day of Service’ when Americans are encouraged to volunteer to help others less fortunate than themselves.

Martin Luther King Day commemorates the birthday of American civil rights leader Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and celebrates his life, achievements and legacy.

King was hugely influential in the American Civil Rights Movement (despite never holding public office) and was a major advocate of non-violent activism in the struggle for the end of racial discrimination under US law. He was assassinated in 1968.

This Federal Holiday in King’s honor, was created in 1983, during the presidency of Ronald Reagan, and first observed in January 1986.

Each year, Americans across the country answer that question by coming together on the King Holiday to serve their communities.

The MLK Day of Service is a part of United We Serve, the The President’s call on all Americans to participate in our nation’s recovery and renewal by serving in our communities.  It calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions.  And because we all know that solving our problems can’t just be about serving once a year, thousands pledge to continue their service all year long.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said…“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’”

Today, I urge everyone to embrace Dr. King’s vision!

My question to you is?  On this day…What are you doing for others?
