Apple is Reportedly Working on a Custom Health Biometric Chip

Reports claim that Apple is now working on a biometric chip dedicated to processing health-related information.

Apple might have just given away a hint about a rumored project involving the creation of a custom health biometric chip. According to a report from CNBC, the company’s Health Sensing hardware team posted a job opening disclosing some information about the project last July 10.

“We are looking for sensor ASIC architects to help develop ASICs for new sensors and sensing systems for future Apple products. We have openings for analog as well as digital ASIC architects,” the job listing reads.

Another posting from August 1st said that the team wants to bring on an engineer that can “help develop health, wellness, and fitness sensors.” These job listings were subtle indicators that Apple wants to step up its game when it comes to health data monitoring and analysis.

Apparently, the company wants to build a custom chip that would be solely responsible for gathering and processing health-related metrics like heart rate while improving the battery efficiency of its devices like the Apple Watch.

At the moment, Apple has not confirmed anything, and the rumors are all just based on speculation. No one knows for sure if the company would just like to improve its current health tracking and monitoring features or integrate better sensors to its existing chipsets for its iPhone and Apple Watch products.

The job listings have since been removed. So, it could either mean that the company has already hired the person that they need or they realized that they’d given too much information away.

To date, Apple’s custom A11 Bionic chip is already equipped with a Neural Engine which speeds up its artificial intelligence tasks. The arrival of a custom health biometric chip could help universalize the technology not just for Apple mobile and wearable products but its MacBooks as well.

Do you believe that a custom health biometric chip would keep Apple on top of the mobile health monitoring competition?
