Tor Project is working with Mozilla

on Tor Mode in Firefox
Firefox may get a Tor mode so that users can access the Internet anonymously. The makers of the Tor browser work on their own words on such a mode that can be downloaded separately in the browser.

The team behind the anonymizing browser has recently had discussions about this with Mozilla’s browser makers, reports the Tor team . In it they discussed the idea of integrating the Tor protocol into Firefox’s private mode in the future. However, that is technically difficult and expensive, so the browser makers are working on a middle way. That would be a ‘Tor mode’ that users can add to Firefox as an add-on. “This way users can experience what a fully integrated Tor experience would look like,” write the developers.

It would not just be an add-on, but one with increased privileges. Most addons are standard Web Extensions, but the Tor mode should also be able to access xpcom functions. For this it is necessary that the add-on is signed by Mozilla, so the makers must work together.

According to the makers, when the mode is switched on, a Tor proxy is set up. The mode would then also implement other Tor properties, such as counteracting fingerprinting. The Tor developers call on other developers to join in the discussion about what the mode would look like in practice. This can be done, for example, as a separate window with its own profile, which is not possible with a new tab. The makers further note that http websites in Tor mode are unlikely to be allowed through, or that https is forced where possible.
