Alphabet daughter Verily stops research on glucose measuring contact lens

Alphabet daughter Verily puts his research to a contact Lens that must measure the Glucose level of the wearer. The amount of glucose in the tear fluid of a person appears to deviate too much from the level of glucose in the blood.

Verily says that the project is ‘on pause’, but does not speak of any plans to resume work at a later date. Work on the contact lens began in 2014 and the wearable had to consist of a wireless chip and a glucose meter in a contact lens. Diabetic patients could thus measure their glucose level without the use of a needle, which is now common, but also painful.

Verily states that this contact lens is one of three projects based on a portable lens. The other two, intended to help with presbyopia and in the aftermath of cataract surgery, are still being continued. The company also continues to work on non-invasive methods to measure the glucose level of diabetics.

Because the current methods for measuring the glucose level are painful and not self-evident, a lot of research is done into alternative methods, such as these. Last year there was also a rumor that Apple would work on a sensor for the Apple Watch with which the glucose level through the skin can be measured. Although the latest Apple Watch has several health-oriented features, it is not there.
