1. Apple fights with the FBI – First there was a terror attack. But in the aftermath of the attack a strange battle began between a law enforcement agency and a tech company. Apple first brought it to the public attention via an open letter. The tech companies were quick to take Apple’s side, just as fast as the politicians who took FBI’s side. To provide a trivial summary of each side’s arguments: FBI believed that the phone is just as similar as any other data record and Apple is obliged to help them obtain it. Apple’s argument is that a backdoor/hack into the phone can be eventually exploited and compromise the security of all it’s customers. In the end, turns out there is an exploit (although the difficulty of performing this is unknown) and a third party company managed to break into the terrorist’s phone and provide FBI with the data it needed.
2. Tesla makes a lot of money on pre-orders – So Tesla pulled off the wraps of the much awaited and much hyped about Tesla 3. Pre-orders began and boy, they got a lot. 276,000 lot. And at $1000 for reserving your car, they just racked in $276 million dollars. For a car 18 months away from production. If this isn’t a mega-coup, I don’t know what is. They hype and aura they have generated is just brilliant. Now (or rather 18 months from now) it’s time to deliver.
3. Bots are taking over the world – And finally Microsoft is bringing it’s A-game to the field. Cortana is being widely appreciated, and Microsoft in their latest Build developer conference, showed us how bots will start being part of our daily lives. It’s very very cool. With bots , each of us will get our own personal assistants and the opportunities in this nascent field is vast. Amazon is constantly improving it’s Alexa system. Time for Apple and Google to respond!
