SolidCP – Cannot open backup device – Operating system error 5

SolidCP is a replacement for open source WebsitePanel control. Since the development is stopped for WebsitePanel, Solidcp is a good choice who are looking for free open source control panel for Windows server.

SolidCP is capable to take database backup as well as you can restore your existing database using it. If you have setup a new server, you may receive the following Error while restoring your Microsoft SQL database:

Error executing ‘RESTORE’ task on ‘Database’ SQL_DATABASE —>

System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapException: Server was unable to process request. —> System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Cannot open backup device ‘C:\Users\SCPServer\AppData\Local\Temp\mydb.bak’.

Operating system error 5(Access is denied.)

From the error message, we can say that it is related to folder permissions issue. For such issue, you need to check for the two users’ permissions on the following folder:

Folder: C:\Users\SCPServer\AppData\Local\Temp\

Users: SCPServer (or if you have used another user for SolidCP server) and NT Service\MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS (if you have SQL Express edition)

Depending on the installation, your SQL server user may be different. You just need to make sure that both users have read, write and modify permissions on the above folder.
