Porsche is hard at work on the new Taycan Electric car, but Porsche doesn’t plan to stop there. Porsche expects that by 2025 half of its sales will come from electrified models, which means that it’s planning more than just the electric Taycan. The next electric Porsche will likely be an electric SUV, since Porsche’s CFO Lutz Meschke recently hinted that it arrive in a few years.

“It’s very likely that a [battery-powered] SUV will come by 2022. There is no final decision yet, but you can expect that this will be the case because we need a large-volume model that is fully electric,” Meschke revealed last week.

After the new electric SUV, Porsche will continue to electrify its lineup, which will include electric versions of the next-generation Panamera and Cayenne. “The direction for the large four-door models will be toward full electrification.”

But Porsche may not stop there, it’s also currently evaluating the idea of introducing an electric version of the next 718 Boxster and Cayman. Eventually Porsche may switch to fully electric powertrains for most of its lineup. “We’re a relatively small company and we will not be able to afford to offer a combustion-engine version in addition to pure-electric models in the long term,” Meschke said. “There will certainly be an overlap of two to three years when the [models with combustions engines] would still be supported because you cannot immediately make the switch in all regions.”

One model that for sure isn’t going to switch to a fully electric powertrain is the 911. Porsche CEO Oliver Blume recently stated that an electric 911 has been ruled out, but a plug-in hybrid version is expected within the next decade.
