Next-Gen VW Golf confirmed with 48-volt mild hybrid

Volkswagen has announced that the next-generation Golf will be offered with a 48-Volt Mild Hybrid system, which is part of its plan to offer electrified versions of its entire lineup. The eighth generation VW Golf will combine a conventional engine with a 48-volt belt-integrated starter generator and a 48-volt battery.

Thanks to the Mild Hybrid system, the next VW Golf will be able to coast with the engine completely turned off and it will be able to pull away from a stop faster thanks to the added power boost from the electrified system. “Electrifying conventional drives will enable us to further reduce consumption and emissions while also increasing dynamics and convenience”, says Dr Frank Welsch, Member of the Board of Management for Volkswagen Passenger Cars.

The mild hybrid system will debut when the eight-generation VW Golf goes on sale in Europe in 2019. It’s not known yet if the 48-Volt Mild hybrid system will also be offered in the U.S.
