Best Cordless Drill (Top 5) – To Make Your Drill More Easy

 Source

Power drills are a very common working tool for construction projects.

Although traditionally, corded power drills were presumed to be more powerful than their Cordless counterparts, this notion is slowly fading away as cordless drills are emerging with advanced drilling capabilities.

Knowing how to select a good electrical drill is pivotal to having a successful masonry project.

As a homeowner, you perhaps know the importance of considering the torque and speed of electric drills when checking out a new electrical drill.

These features very often determine the strength of a drill. But even more important is the process of knowing how to choose the finest bits for your project.

That’s why in this edition we venture to analyze a number of drills and come up with this list of the best cordless drills of all times.

Top 5 Cordless Drills Overview

Having explored the main features to check out in cordless drills, let us now examine the top 5 drills on the market. Let’s begin with …

Best Lithium Ion Cordless Drill – Black & Decker LDX120C

The Black and Decker LDX120c is a fairly good cordless drill for homeowners and small masonry projects, albeit not very commendable for bigger projects.

Though the B & D LDX120C may not be the most powerful drill in the industry, I still prefer it to most other drills for its compatibility that allow you to maneuver through projects with limited space. Besides, it’s cheap and affordable to an average homeowner.

The LDX120C has a torque of 115 inch-pound and speeds of up to 650RPM. It is shipped with a rechargeable battery and utilizes a 20-Volt motor.

Features
  • Power & battery: uses the normal rechargeable B & D Lithium-ion battery (20-Volts, 1500 Watts).
  • Torque: 115 inch-pound
  • Speed: 650 Rotations Per Minute (RPM)
Pros Cons
  • Cheaper
  • Powerful: it can even drill a 1 3/8’ through a 1 5/8’ although with difficulty.
  • Compatible: it is parts e.g. the battery is compatible with other B & D batteries hence could ease the transition.
  • Availability of replacement parts: it is easy to find replacement parts once it breaks down.
  • Not very durable. The casing of the drill is made of plastic that isn’t very strong.
  • Short battery life: its battery stays between 30 minutes to about 1 hour.

Best Cordless Drill under 100 – The Bosch 18-Volts

Now, there is “something” about the design of the Bosch cordless drill that makes me want to call it a little “girlish”.

This is because I think it throws an elegance of design and a matching compactness and easy-to-carry weight that is very adorable to most ladies.

Its light weight makes it a fairly good cordless drill for light tasks that include material like wood or plastic. Given the 18-Volt power rating, it is almost certain that it doesn’t have a very big diversion from the other reviewed drills.

It does perform much like the DC970K although it comes at a fairly good bargain. Here is how it performs:

Features
  • Power & battery: 1 rechargeable Lithium-ion battery (18-Volts).
  • Torque: 350 inch-pound
  • Speed: 1300 Rotations Per Minute (RPM)
Pros Cons
  • Compact and ultra-light in weight: it weighs just about 3 lbs. and has an averagely good handle.
  • Has a dual gear mode
  • Has a sturdy outer casing
  • Cheaper
The main problem associated with the Bosch drill so far is the fact that its battery drains too fast. Owing to this, it could be recommendable to have two or more batteries so that you can use one while charging the other while in the field.

Best 18v Cordless Drill – Dewalt DC970K 18-Volt

If you are intending to use a drill over simple home repairing and DIY projects, then the Dewalt DC970k will definitely be a good companion for such tasks.

It is a compact drill with awesome looks and a very strong casing that could sustain a number of crushes without breaking. Even then, should it break down, most of its repair parts are easily available (being a product of Dewalt).

It is also cheaper and fairly strong for drills that rank below $100.  Here is how the drill performed:

Features
  • Power & battery:Shipped with 2 rechargeable Lithium-ion batteries (18-Volts, 380 Watts).
  • Torque: 450 inch-pound
  • Speed: 1500 Rotations Per Minute (RPM)

Pros Cons
  • Cheaper
  • Light Weight: About 4.7 lbs.
  • Has a great dual gear mode.
  • Durable: the 970 has a very strong outer casing that makes it very tolerant to faults.
  • It does not easily overheat and is very comfortable to use.
  • Not very powerful. The only major drawback you might find with the DC970K is the fact that the drill is not very strong it cannot really be useful when working on large projects.
  • The battery also drains quite quickly.

Best Hammer Cordless Drill – The Makita FXD061

Of all the drills manufacturing companies in the market, I (personally) often think Makita has been the only formidable competitor to Dewalt’s dominance. And that is why the talk on the top 5 cordless drills in the market could not be complete without chipping in a little of Makita’s cordless drill “spicing”.

The FXD061 takes much after the good old DC970K from Dewalt.

But for the fact that Makita seems to be a little more compact, lighter and definitely has different coloring, one could easily think these two drills are just sides of the same coin.

Features
  • Power & battery: 1 rechargeable Lithium-ion battery (18-Volts, 3 Ah, 58 Watts).
  • Torque:530 inch-pound
  • Speed: 550 Rotations Per Minute (RPM)
Pros Cons
  • Has a fast-charging feature.
  • Dual speed modes that can be switched to ease efficiency when working on different materials.
  • Is durable: The Makita has a very strong casing that can easily sustain fault and accidents.
  • Cool: since it uses a brushless motor, it is very quiet and can be useful in environments that do not require too much noise.

The chuck of the Makita FXD061 has lately received some bad reputations on being a little loose and not adjustable. However, that is just about 5% of the released products. And this is why you might need to thoroughly test it before making a trade. Otherwise, this drill is really good and very commendable to homeowners.

Best 20v Cordless Drill – The Dewalt DCD771C2 20-Volts

We reserved the best for the last. Dewalt Company is popular in producing very sturdy and elegant drills.

The DCD771C2 seems to have been the very best of them for a very long time. DCD771C2 has been the market’s most favorite Dewalt cordless drill with nearly 3000 reviews on Amazon and still retaining a very high rating to date. The reason why I tend to think this has been retained is mainly due to the ruggedness and the small size of the drill.

It utilizes a brushless motor with a power rating of 20-volts. Though with a high power rating, it has a slightly lower torque of 500 inch-pounds and a speed of 1500 RPM.

Features
  • Power & battery: Shipped with 2 rechargeable Lithium-ion batteries (20-Volts, 1.3 Ah).
  • Torque: 500 inch-pound
  • Speed: 1500 Rotations Per Minute (RPM)

Pros Cons
  • It is durable: it is made of a strong casing that can sustain accidents
  • It is powerful:  despite the small size, it can be able to deploy up to 500 in-lb. of torque
  • Smaller and easier to maneuver
  • A good LED: having an LED may not be a major feature. But the 771’s LED stays around for an extra 10 seconds when drilling giving you adequate time to focus when working on a project
  • It is quiet: being brushless, it is a very cool gadget when at work.
A weak chuck: There don’t seem to be any serious complaint about the Dewalt DCD771C2 yet, it’s just the normal complaints on service delivery. However, about 80% of analyzed critics on Amazon attributed its bad rating to the seemingly weak chuck that is made of plastic unlike the olden metal casing. Otherwise, this tool was way off the charts.

Here is my take…

Honestly, pinpointing on the finest cordless drill among the several brands blasted for sale is quite a difficult task. But based on a keen assessment of the aforementioned features for various available cordless drills in the market, I had the conviction that the Dewalt DC771C2 topped the list in performance.

First, it had a higher power rating and an equally higher strength in terms of torque and speed when compared with other drills. It has a very strong and durable casing that could remain intact despite accidents. Having the dual gear mode and a somehow unique LED crowned it in performance.

On a keener analysis, it appeared to be the most easily available and easy to repair drill. Finally, thinking about cost, one could think it’s overpriced, but I noted that the DC771C2 had different bargains for bits package.

What key features should you look out for in Cordless Drills?

Power Rating

The power rating of an electric drill is always a key feature to check before placing an order. Electric power consumed by a drill is often equated to the actual drilling strength of the drill.

One of the most popular power rating options is, of course, the 18-Volt cordless drill. Such types of drills are a popular companion for most homeowners and people who just love to DIY (Do it Your Self) in masonry. Then again, this option is often not so powerful enough for industrial usage.

The 24-Volt and the modern 36-Volt options are far better options for professional usage. However, with more power often comes an equally higher spending. But should you be comfortable spending a few more bucks on a really good cordless drill; then the 24-V or the 36-V drill would be the best options.

Torque& Speed

There is a thin line of separation between the speed and torque of a drill. The torque of a drill is simply the rotating force of a drill.

Torque is often the measure of the strength of a cordless drill and is measured in inch-pounds. Speed, on the other hand, is the measure of Rotations made Per Minute (RPM).

These two measures combined determine the actual strength of a drill. These two features also top the list when picking a good cordless drill for a project.

However, if you are thinking of doing just a short-term project, considering all this may not be necessary. All you will need to check for is a comfortable and easy to use a drill.

Battery life

Running out or charge when working on a project could be quite annoying (I guess). So, it is always good to consider the battery life of a cordless drill at buying time. This will determine the time it would take the battery to drain once it is put to use.

Drills with longer battery life could be more preferable to those with a shorter battery life. Then again, I too admit that at times, it could be hard to afford cordless drills with long battery lives.

Thus, it is always recommendable to buy additional batteries that can be used just in case the main battery drains during the course of working. The most recommendable battery types are that can be recharged.

Dual-gear Mode

The dual gear mode is a feature that is present in most modern cordless drills and acts much like the lower gears of an automatic transmission.

This feature is often located on the top part of a drill. When switched on, it helps the drill to lower or raise the speed of a drill without necessarily dropping the power or the torque of the drill.

The feature is very important when handling thick wood. Often, thick wood can easily lower the speed of the drill.

Switching to a lower gear mode could enable the drill to retain the torque but lower the speed. This increases the chances of splitting or drilling through the wood.

Multiple Torque Measures

Having multiple torque settings on a drill is somewhat a guarantee of varied efficiency when working different types of material.

For instance, you would not necessarily be interested in using the similar torque when drilling through Mahogany as when drilling through a simple cardboard.

Thus, multiple torque measures will enable you to vary the strength and thus could give you a better performance for your project.

LED working light

The LED is often placed adjacent to the drill’s trigger and it goes on automatically once the trigger is switched on. You see, not all projects are done while the sun is still overhead.

Emergencies sometimes push us to do what otherwise could have been a day’s work in the middle of the night. And on occasion, you might be working in areas with low light intensity like in tunnels.

In such situations, you might need some lighting. In such instances, it could be recommendable to consider buying drills with some LED lighting.

Bits

Lastly, it is very crucial to consider the bits shipped by a drill or the backup bits you might be willing to purchase for a drill. The bits you employ on a project will very much determine the quality of work and the ease of carrying out the project. Always consider having the flat bits, square bits and star bits at all projects.
