Many people do think that vegetarianism exclusively means clogging to eating vegetables alone. Amazingly there are about seven (7) different types of vegetarians known worldwide. Most vegetarians do not eat vegetables, while some abstain from egg, others don’t take milk and lots more. So, generally speaking, vegetarians are not those who live on vegetables alone as their source of food.

Here are different types of vegetarians – their diets and nutrition which you will interest you to know. Meanwhile, before we properly delve into the different types of vegetarians, let’s take a break and see briefly who a vegetarian is.

Who is A Vegetarian?

According to the Vegetarian Society, a vegetarian is “someone who lives on a diet of grains, pulses, legumes, nuts, seeds, vegetables, fruits, fungi, algae, yeast and/or some other non-animal-based foods (e.g. salt) with, or without, Dairy Products, honey and/or eggs”. Vegetarians do not eat any foods that are produced or contains part or all of a dead or living animal.

Of course, different types of vegetarian, their diets and nutrition are based on the variation in the extent to which they exclude animal products. Below are the types of vegetarian in our society today.

7 Different Types of Vegetarians – Their Diets & Nutrition

1. Ovo Vegetarians

Just as the implies, ovo vegetarian eats egg and its products but abstain from dairy products. They avoid red and white meats, fish, poultry, fowl and dairy products. However, this type of vegetarians will eat egg products, like those from chickens farmed for eggs, also referred to as egg-laying hens.

2. Lacto-ovo Vegetarians

As there are vegetarians who avoid dairy products like milk, cheese etc, and meats, fish, poultry etc, there are also vegetarians who consume dairy products and eggs only but exclude themselves from meat, fish and poultry. This is the most common type of vegetarianism in the U.S., Canada, and Western Europe. Lacto-ovo vegetarians eat such foods as cheese, ice cream, yogurt, milk, and eggs, as well as foods made with these ingredients.

3. Vegans

A complete vegan abstains from all dairy products, eggs, or any other products which are derived from animals. He avoids all animal products, including meat, fish, poultry, eggs, dairy products, any foods containing by-products of these ingredients, wool, silk, leather, and any nonfood items made with animal byproducts. Some vegans also avoid honey.

4. Lacto Vegetarians

This is a direct opposite of ovo vegetarianism. Lacto vegetarians eat dairy products but avoid eggs. They abstain from red or white meats, fish, poultry, fowl or eggs, but use dairy products. Products common to a lacto vegetarian include cheese, cow’s milk and yogurt.

5. Flexitarian

This is more or less a new type of vegetarians. These set of people eat mainly plant-based foods like pumpkins, cucumber, watermelon, rice, beans etc and only on rare bases allow themselves to consume meats and their products.

6. Pollotarian

A pollotarian vegetarian avoids red meat and fish but eats chicken, poultry and fowl. Why this set of people eats red meat and avoid other types of meats has made their vegetarianism questionable.

7. Pescatarian

The last but not the least type of vegetarianism are the Pescatarians. These set of vegetarians are known for their avoidance of red meat but eats chicken and fish. Pescatarians or Pescetarians are similar to Pollotarians, the only different between the two of them is that, while the pescatarians avoid only red meat, the pollotarians avoid both red meat and fish.
