Soon: The social app you need to organize all the things you want to do

We live in such a fast-paced world these days. We can’t even carry on in-person conversations like we used to. I try to talk to friends or coworkers, only to be brought back to the small device in my hand that is seemingly running my life these days. On the other hand, I can use a Social App all day long without any issue.

When it comes to setting plans, even somewhat menial ones, you can forget it. “Oh, I really want to watch that show when it premiers,” you say to yourself, only to forget it even exists until three seasons later.

A group of developers from Lowercase Capital have created a social app to help. Since we can’t put our phones down anyway, we might as well put them to a more productive use, right?

The Idea Behind ‘Soon’

Matt Mazzeo, the managing director of Lowercase Capital, gathered some friends to help with his new project. Mazzeo wanted to create a Social app that helped users organize the more social aspects of life, which the team refers to as virtual events. Unlike many other event-finding apps, Soon does not gather information from outside sources.

Instead, the app’s events are user-generated. That means whatever events you come across were created by a real person who thought it was important enough to share.

The app also supports many different types of events, from going away parties with real people to online events such as an AMA on Reddit. You can also add a link to another application so it brings up the specific event’s page in Soon. When you post an event, you can also make it private. The social app allows you to communicate among the group of attendees using its built-in messaging system.

The Perfect Social App for Millennials?

Soon is aimed at the young crowd, at least at first. The app is being promoted for use during SXSW next week, and by catering to the millennial crowd it can gain a lot of momentum.

Young people are less likely to write things down or remember details, mostly due to our shorter attention spans in this world where technology does almost everything for us. If you were to ask an older person to set a date for something, they are more likely to take the time to do exactly that, whereas a Millennial is more likely to say “Got it” as they wave you off and never look away from their device.

By putting the tool in their hand, Soon is making it possible for the younger generation to get back to the old ways of doing things – except they won’t have to give up their smartphone to do it.

Starting From Scratch

The team behind Soon says they started it as a passion project, not necessarily to undergo a new business venture. Sometimes, that’s exactly what makes an app stand out – passion. The team admits that right now, Soon is still in the beginning stages. Since the app doesn’t gather info from other apps or websites to create its event list, it’s betting on people to engage and help start the process.

For new users of Soon, the app displays a list of other users to follow. This list is based on your interests, location, and a variety of other factors. While this sounds cool, the user is urged to be careful not to fill their page with events from too many people they don’t really know, which kind of defeats the whole purpose of using the event-finding app.

So if you’re looking to be more social, and also more organized with the events going on in your life, maybe giving Soon a shot isn’t such a bad idea. You can download it from the App Store here.
