Michigan State nabs 3-star DL twin brothers from Ohio for 2018

Perhaps the next great family lineage at Michigan State will be the Slade Family. On Sunday, the football program picked up not one, by two more pledges from the Class of 2018.

Defensive linemen and twin brothers, Zachary and Jacob Slade, announced their commitment to the Spartans.

Zachary (6-4, 240 pounds) and Jacob (6-4, 255 pounds) are both products of Olentangy High School in Lewis Center, Ohio. Both are rated as 3-star prospects, according to the 247Sports Composite, and both are listed among the top-70 players in the state of Ohio; Zachary is No. 68 and Jacob is No. 69.

In terms of position, Zachary ranks as the 100th-best weak-side defensive end, while Jacob is regarded as the 86th-best strong-side defensive end.

Their commitment to the Spartans from the Slade Bros. comes just days after both received an offer from the program, and roughly a week after attending a summer camp hosted by MSU. It was the second time both Zachary and Jacob attended a Spartan-based camp, the first coming around this time one year ago.

Prior to their offers from Michigan State, the Slade tandem had received scholarship offers from various schools, including in-state MAC program Ohio as well as Eastern Michigan. MSU is the first ‘Power 5’ FBS school to offer them a scholarship for 2018.

Being twins, it’s only fitting that recruiting trails for both Zachary and Jacob respectively are identical.

Michigan State fans have become very familiar in recent history with families playing on the field together in East Lansing. The ‘Bullough’ line stems all the way back to the 1950’s. But the last name has been on the roster since 2010 when Max Bullough debuted as a freshman. He and middle brother Riley Bullough have since graduated but their youngest brother, Byron Bullough, enters 2017 as a redshirt junior.

There’s also another ongoing line of brothers at MSU, the ‘Allen’ Brothers. Oldest brother Jack Allen was a 2-time first-team Big Ten offensive lineman and 2015 AP All-American in his 4+ seasons. Middle brother Brian Allen will be a senior this upcoming season, and youngest sibling Matt Allen redshirted in his first year last season.

2018 CLASS COUNTER: 11

The addition of the Slade Bros. now gives Michigan State a total of 11 hard commits from the Class of 2018, a class that currently ranks 35th in the country and 9th in the Big Ten. They’re also the 8th and 9th prospects to pledge that are ranked as 3-star chips.

A lot of their recruiting early on for this class has come courtesy of “that state to the south.” Now with the Slade Bros. (verbally) aboard, seven of the 11 commits hail from the Buckeye State.

They’ve also done very well in June, that’s now five players this month alone and six since May 29.
