If you follow professional athletics to any extent, you have heard most likely heard countless stories about fans having cool interactions with famous athletes. Heck, maybe you have a pretty awesome story yourself about that one player who did something special to make your day.

That’s exactly what happened to a couple of fans on Tuesday night before the Detroit Red Wings took the ice against the Ottawa Senators. While fans Mike and Ryan were sitting in the front row during warmups, Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg managed to hit the glass, knocking Mike’s beer over. What happened next was unforgettable for these fans.

From The Ottawa Citizen:

“My buddy Mike and I were down against the glass for the warms ups last night in the Red Wings end… he had his beer sitting on the up against the glass as we were taking pics. When Hank was done stretching, he got up and banged into the boards a couple times.”

“In doing so, Mike’s pint went smashing to the floor. We knocked on the glass to show him what happened as I got a kick out of it. Zetterberg started laughing! A few minutes later, he went over to the bench, grabbed one of his brand new game sticks and autographed it saying: “Sorry! I owe u one! (with his signature.) He skated over and tossed it over the glass to us! How classy is that guy!!! Amazing!”

Zetterberg still has it

Zetterberg, who is 36-years-old, has been a bright spot for the Red Wings in an otherwise disappointing season. He has played in all 80 games for the Wings, scoring 16 goals and picking up 50 assists for a team-high 66 points.

Prior to the start of the season, there were plenty of critics who were convinced that Hank was all but washed up, but he proved that was not the case by leading by example both on and off of the ice once again.

A tough season in all repects for the Red Wings

Unfortunately for Zetterberg and the Red Wings, when all was said and done, they were shutout 2-0 by the Senators. With the loss, the Wings now sit at 32-36-12 with just two games remaining on their 2016-2017 schedule. They will miss the playoffs for the first time since the 1989-1990 season when they finished 28-38-14.

This weekend, the Red Wings will be hosting their final two games ever at the Joe Louis Arena, which will be closing its doors at the conclusion of the season. On Saturday, the Wings will welcome the Montreal Canadiens and then will take the ice on Sunday against the New Jersey Devils in the finale.

With owner Mike Ilitch passing away in February, the Joe Louis Arena hosting its final games, and the Red Wings 25-year NHL Playoff streak coming to an end, it has certainly been a very difficult season for fans of the “winged wheel.”
