Five goals by Toronto leads to Penguins defeat, 5-2

The Pittsburgh Penguins fell in dramatic fashion to the Toronto Maple Leafs in a Saturday night match up.

The Maple Leafs dominated the first period, with goals by Kasperi Kapanen and Nazem Kadri making it 2-0.

Kadri would score again in the second period.

Towards the end of the second period, it looked like Brian Dumolin opened up scoring for the Penguins. However, the potential goal was called back after officials declared he committed goalie interference.

As if taking the goal away wasn’t enough, Dumolin was then penalized, giving Mitchell Marner of Toronto an opportunity to score for the Leafs late in the second, making it 4-0.

But the Penguins weren’t about to allow to go out without a fight. Sidney Crosby and Patric Hornqvist scored in the third, but it was too little too late.

Patrick Marleau scored at the very end to make it 5-2, Toronto.

“They got a couple of quality chances and they finished,” Penguins Head Coach Mike Sullivan said. “They were opportunistic early in the game. I thought we had a good start, we were controlling territory, we were controlling momentum. We had opportunities to score. We couldn’t seem to finish tonight.”

“We pushed at the end, but obviously a four-goal deficit is tough.”

Brad’s Thoughts

If Dumolin’s goal had not been taken away, it would’ve been possible the Penguins could’ve gained some momentum for this game. With this being early March, and the playoffs looming, every point counts.

This call was beyond shaky, as it looks more like a Toronto player pushed Dumolin into the goalie as opposed to him actually committing a penalty.

The Penguins host the Dallas Stars Sunday night in Pittsburgh.
