Steelers name Randy Fichtner offensive coordinator

It didn’t take long for the Pittsburgh Steelers to find Todd Haley’s replacement.

Only a day after announcing Haley would not return for a seventh season as the team’s Offensive Coordinator, the Steelers announced that Randy Fichtner would take the role.

Fichtner has served as the quarterback coach since 2010. However, he has been with the organization since 2007, where he was hired as the wide receiver coach.

“I want to thank Coach (Mike) Tomlin and Art Rooney II for giving me this opportunity to be the Offensive coordinator for this organization,” said Fichtner. “We have a tremendous roster, and it will be my charge to continue putting our offensive players in position to succeed and score points.”

“We have the nucleus to be successful, and I am thrilled about the chance to lead the offense as we have already started preparing for the 2018 season,” he continued.

His hiring in 2007 was his first NFL job. He had previously served a graduate assistant for Michigan, Southern California, Nevada and Memphis.

Fichtner has also worked as the wide receiver’s coach for Purdue, the offensive coordinator for Arkansas State and the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach for Memphis.

The 54-year-old, who hails from Cleveland but played high school football in Meadville, has worked with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger since his hiring.

He also inherits Landry Jones, Joshua Dobbs, as he will continue his role as quarterback coach with his offensive coordinator duties.

In addition to the quarterbacks, Fichtner also inherits a stacked offensive line, star wide receivers, a solid crop of running backs and a reliable handful of tight ends.

The Steelers offense was ranked No. 3 in the NFL this past season.

Fichtner’s playing experience includes his time at Purdue University, where he competed as a defensive back. His father is Ross Fichtner, a former defensive back for the Cleveland Browns.
