The Pittsburgh Riverhounds have lost their three-game USL winning streak.

The Riverhounds hosted Louisville City FC on Saturday at Highmark Stadium. On the Monongahela River, the Riverhounds went down early as Luke Spencer scored in the 7′ minute.

The goal was assisted by Brian Ownby, who intercepted the pass from new Riverhounds defender Connor Maloney. Maloney joined the Riverhounds this Friday, on loan from the Columbus Crew SC. He is part of four players the Riverhounds have received from Columbus.

Also from Columbus is Lalas Abubakar, another defender. Abubakar has only featured once for the Riverhounds this season, against the Charleston Battery on April 8. Also on the roster from Columbus are midfielders Marshall Hollingsworth and Abuchi Obinwa.

Despite the multiple shifts in the defense, centerback Joseph Greenspan relishes the acquisition of the two defenders.

“I think they’re both fantastic players and they deserve to play at this level,” Greenspan said. “They’ve come into the group and done well. They’ve only been here yesterday, and today, so it’s always tough. I go back to my first couple days with the team and the result against Saint Louis. It’s hard to get integrated into the team immediately, right off the bat.”

The Riverhounds only had one yellow card shown in the entire match to Abubakar, occurring in the 41′ minute. As for Louisville, two yellow cards went to Mark-Anthony Kaye (45′) and Paco Craig (75′).

However, a red card was shown to Paolo DelPiccolo in the 87′ minute, for a harsh foul on Romeo Parkes. Parkes entered the match in the 63′ minute to relieve Jack Thompson in the midfield.

Despite the red card, and other opportunities, the Riverhounds could not find the equalizer. After the match, head coach Dave Brandt spoke on missed opportunities.

“Kevin [Kerr] had a chance or two,” Brandt said. “Corey [Hertzog] had a bunch of chances and I think he and I are both scratching our heads, and the rest of our team. Almost always, one or two of those go in and he had some really good looks.”

The Riverhounds did have a short week to prepare for Louisville. The Riverhounds traveled to face the Ottawa Senators last Saturday, and then made their way to Illinois to face Chicago United FC in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

“It was an odd week for us,” Brandt said. “The travel to Ottawa, the travel to Chicago – kind of a split group, but enough first team guys made the trip. You get back Thursday morning at 7:30 and you’re like ‘man, we’ve got Louisville City on Saturday.’ I just think it took a while for us to get our rhythm.”

The Riverhounds will travel to face the Harrisburg City Islanders on Wednesday. The Riverhounds currently lead the Islanders in the Keystone Derby with one win, out of three matches. Kickoff is slated for 6:30 p.m.
