Football Social Media Phenomenons: 4 of the Best

In the modern era, social media is an increasingly important tool for football clubs of any level. It’s often used by clubs to update fans on news, as well as relay a matches actions. However, every so often, we see this combination of football and social media explode, and it goes viral around the world – just see Borussia Mönchengladbach’s recent tweet before their match with Celtic. So, including both amateur football clubs and new ways of experiencing football, here are the top football social media phenomenons of recent times:

1) Hyde United FC – The Hyde United FC Twitter account is the benchmark for the majority of British clubs in terms of their Social Media accounts. During their famous 28 game run without a run, their dismissive attitude towards who scored against them became increasingly hilarious, until they eventually won and proclaimed the great escape was on when they were 20 points adrift with 10 games to go. To top that off, in 2014 when they featured a team of trialists in a friendly, the Hyde United FC Twitter account decided to list their team as an XI made up entirely of left-wing politicians. Hyde United FC are truly legends of football Social Media Phenomenons.

2) Hashtag United – They may have only existed for 8 months, but Hashtag United are attracting crowds of over 200k. With well over 100k followers on Instagram and nearly the same amount of Twitter followers, this team are well and truly a legitimate example of modern football’s social media phenomenons. Hashtag United play their matches, including one at Wembley, in secret with very few fans, if any, and then edit the matches before broadcasting them on their YouTube channel or their captain’s. It may not represent the future of football, but Hashtag United are a unique in terms of football social media phenomenons during an age of it’s growing importance in the sport.

3) LineUp – A group of 8 freestylers from the UK who came together to form said group in January 2015. Through their various social media channels, such as YouTube, Twitter and Instagram, they provide their fans, of which there are well over a million, with great football-related content. In terms of football social media phenomenons, The Lineup UK are on this rise in popularity. Among their many high profile partnerships, including Nike and adidas, is one with us, CeleBreak! So if you fancy seeing the guys from The Lineup UK live and in person, come and join us in the summer!

4) Sleaford Town FC and Jarrow Roofing FC – Now we’ve lumped these two together because they fit into the same category of football social media phenomenons: where something at the match goes wrong and social media delivers the news in a wonderfully comedic, deadpan way. Despite their ground only holding a maximum of 1000 fans, United Counties League Premier Division side Sleaford Town FC had a tweet which received over 4’000 retweets and favourites. This simple tweet from the account manager explaining the previous lack of activity in the second half sums up the wonderful unpredictability of amateur football.

However, during a friendly with Hartlepool FC the same issue would befall Northern League Division 1 team Jarrow Roofing FC, and the subsequent tweet achieved the same results as that of Sleaford Town FC.

Personally, these two are possibly my favourite type of the many football social media phenomenons we see today. Their light-hearted absurdity reminds us why we love football of any level, despite all the over seriousness that surrounds the sport these days.
