Blue Angels vets focus on military suicide prevention

A charitable foundation created by former Blue Angels pilots is focusing on suicide prevention for military veterans. The Blue Angels Foundation hopes to bring awareness to the epidemic while raising money to help veterans find jobs and housing, said Mike Campbell, the foundation president. Campbell, who flew with the elite fighter jet demonstration team from 1987-88, said he and other former Blue Angel pilots are alarmed by the growing number of suicides among veterans. Based on the latest research, America is losing 8,000 veterans to suicide every year. “We want to share that story and put together a campaign to save lives,” Campbell said. According to the latest information from the Department of Veterans Affairs, 20 veterans take their own lives each day, but that number includes full reporting from only 20 states. Other estimates have put the number at 22 veterans a day. Researchers say the data are difficult to track because deaths from drug overdoses, reckless driving and other causes might appear accidental but could also be intentional. The military suicide prevention campaign 22 Kill encourages people to do 22 push-ups and post a video of the accomplishment on social media to raise awareness of the issue.
