  • Somdev Devvarman announced his retirement from professional tennis in January 2017. Somdev was a tennis sensation at the University of Virginia – winning back to back NCAA titles in 2007 and 2008.
  • The Board of Control for Cricket president Anurag Thakur and its secretary Ajay Shirke have been sacked by the Supreme Court today. For failing to implement the reforms suggested by the RM Lodha panel, the BCCI will now have an observer, who will be appointed on January 19.

  • Nana Akufo-Addo has been sworn in as Ghana’s new president after beating John Mahama in last month’s election. Mr Akufo-Addo, a 72-year-old former human rights lawyer, promised free high school education and more factories.
  • Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut won the men’s singles title of the Chennai Open 2017. Agut beat Russian 20-year-old Daniil Medvedev 6-3 and 6-4 to claim the first ATP tournament of the season.
  • Cristiano Ronaldo has been crowned the first ever world player of the year at the Best FIFA Football Awards on 10 January 2017. The Real Madrid star fought off competition from Barcelona rival Lionel Messi to win the trophy in its inaugural year.
  • Flipkart, India’s top e-commerce group, on Monday appointed Kalyan Krishnamurthy as its new CEO, replacing co-founder Binny Bansal. Bansal has been elevated to become the Group CEO. Krishnamurthy joined Flipkart in June 2016 and has been deeply involved in the company’s overhauling process.
  • Five world records of Yoga are being attempted by more than one lakh people in Bhilai under the guidance of Yog guru Baba Ramdev. The event is organised to celebrate National Youth Day in Yoga way on the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda on 12 January 2017. Over one lakh people will perform Surya Namaskar at one place together to make the world record.
  • Natarajan Chandrasekaran, the CEO of Tata Consultancy Services, was named the new Chairman of Tata Sons, signalling an end to the uncertainty that has gripped the $100 billion coffee-to-cars conglomerate since the sacking of Cyrus Mistry.
  • Former Union minister and four-time MP from Khurja-Noida seat, Ashok Pradhan, rejoined BJP on Friday after a three-year stint with the ruling Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradash. Three other SP functionaries from Noida also joined the BJP along with Pradhan.
  • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) on Saturday reduced its turnover fees by 25% to Rs 15 per Rs 1 crore worth of turnover from Rs 20 earlier.

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has eased the cash withdrawal limit at automated teller machines (ATMs) with immediate effect. Now, customers will be allowed to withdraw as much as Rs10,000 per day per card, compared to the earlier Rs4,500. These enhanced cash withdrawal limits will be within the weekly cap of Rs24,000
  • Former US astronaut Eugene Cernan, who became the last astronaut to walk on the moon in an experience that he said made him one with the universe, died on Monday at 82.
  • Former Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh chief minister and a senior Congress leader, Narayan Dutt Tiwari along with his son Rohit Shekhar joined the BJP.   • Delhi Police Commissioner Alok Kumar Verma was on Thursday appointed director of CBI. His name was cleared by a three-member selection panel headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and CJI Jagdish Singh Khehar and Congress leader in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge as members.

  • Indian badminton ace Saina Nehwal notched up her first title after a career-threatening injury by claiming the Malaysia Masters Grand Prix Gold. Saina Nehwal beat Thai Pornpawee Chochuwong by 22-20 22-20 in a 46-minute clash.
  • Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar has received an extension of service for a year. He was due to retire this month after a two-year stint. The order came from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet for the extension of services of Jaishankar till January 28, 2018.
  • Australia opening batsman David Warner won the Allan Border Medal on Monday for the second year in row, becoming only the fourth player to achieve that feat.
  • President Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday posthumously conferred the Ashok Chakra on Havildar Hangpan Dada of the Rashtiya Rifles, who laid down his life after single-handedly killing three terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir last year.
