Frosted Flakes: Monkey’s Gone

Accomplishments, Football Playoffs, & Jerry Jeff Walker

There are rivalries and then there is getting a monkey off your back.

The series between Nebraska and Creighton has has some very good series. The teams went back and fourth in wins for a while there. Then things changed about eight years ago. Tim Miles came right about the time that the Bluejays were starting to peak. Creighton’s talent level went up when Nebraska was starting a rebuild with very little in the cupboard.

Greg McDermott came to Creighton a year before Tim Miles came to Nebraska. Greg was replacing Dana Altman who was the architect of Bluejay basketball. Before him, the Bluejays were just another Division 1 team in the pool of 300+. So, when Greg arrived he was taking over a team that had seen recent success and enough talented players to keep the momentum going.

That’s not to take away form his coaching. He’s one of the best out there and that’s part of the reason why Creighton has done so well.

Tim Miles, on the other hand, took over a Nebraska basketball squad that needed coaching, recruiting, and time for it to flourish. This was not a team that could change overnight.

It has been seven years but Nebraska finally got that monkey off it’s back. Coach Miles, who has coached against McDermott fourteen times and never won, got an even bigger money of his.

It feels good to beat an in state rival, especially on your home turf. Enjoy it, but it’s time to move on. We’ve got a Big Ten schedule that is looking better than expected ahead of us. Let’s move on to the next task at hand and push forward on what should be a historic Nebrasketball season.

Anyway, on to flakes...
